Could Robin Van Persie ever return to Arsenal?

Robin Van PersieI’m sure that many Arsenal fans are still bemused about Arsene Wenger’s decision to avoid signing a striker during the January transfer window.

Whilst Liverpool can rely on Daniel Sturridge and Luis Suarez, Manchester United can call upon Wayne Rooney and Robin Van Persie and Manchester City have both Alvaro Negredo and Sergio Aguero, Arsenal have very few options in this department.

Their only quality option is Olivier Giroud and even he lacks the presence of all the players listed above. He’s more of an Edin Dzeko than a Sergio Aguero.

There’s nothing wrong with this, but it’s often difficult to build a title challenge when you’re relying on these kind of players. Olivier Giroud holds the ball up well and links up well with his team mates but he’s not a prolific goal-scorer and he produces very few moments of magic.

That’s probably why there’s still so much conversation about the strikers that Arsenal could bring in during the summer transfer window. There’s a general dissatisfaction around the Emirates.

Oddly enough, this resulted in Arsenal getting linked to Robin Van Persie, the same man who created a real stink when he left the Gunners 18 months ago.

At the time RVP’s £24m move to rival club Manchester United struck many as the death knell for Arsenal. As it happens, the Gunners have strengthened every other area of their squad, whilst The Red Devils have fallen from grace.

At the very least, this provides some reason to believe that the Dutchman could be tempted by a move back to his former club. Whether Arsenal fans would have him back or not, remains to be seen.

Before Arsenal’s midweek showdown with United, Arsene Wenger was asked whether he would go back in for RVP. Here’s his answer:

“Look, I don’t think that is an ideal subject for us to treat today. I think it is best we don’t talk about it at the moment.” (Source: The Mirror)

It’s interesting that he chose not to deny his interest out of hand. He’s clearly uncomfortable talking about a player before a big game, but a simple ‘no’, couldn’t have hurt anybody, could it?

It’s all speculation at the moment, of course, but it’s strange to think that Robin Van Persie returning to the Emirates is not an impossibility. What a topsy-turvy world we live in, eh?

What’s your take? Could Robin Van Persie ever make a move back to Arsenal?
