Edinson CavaniManchester United have been linked with a summer move for Edinson Cavani since the January transfer window closed. At first, I found it all rather hard to believe. After all, this is a man who would command a startling, unthinkably huge price-tag.

Even with The Red Devils enviable resources, it’s going to be difficult to tie up a deal for such a prominent player within an impressive, cash-rich French side. His current pay-masters, Paris Saint Germain snapped him up in the summer and they aren’t likely to want to let him go any time soon.

He’s been a big hit in Ligue 1, hasn’t struggled for goals and hasn’t been forced into Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s shadow. All of which suggests he wont be moving on any time soon.

But football is a funny old game. Things change very quickly indeed. According to The Mirror, his representatives have traveled to London to hold discussions with Chelsea and Manchester United regarding their client’s future.

This source suggests that ‘Manchester United are the more advanced of the two clubs’, after Sir Alex Ferguson put in a phone call to Laurent Blanc to discuss the Uruguayan ace.

If there’s any truth to these claims, it’s very exciting news indeed. With Wayne Rooney’s future uncertain and Robin Van Persie getting on in years, it’s good to see David Moyes looking to the future and weighing up his options.

It’s particularly impressive to see him aim to high. Cavani is among the top strikers in the world and has a perfect build for the Premier League. This would be the kind of signing that could make Manchester United’s favourites for the title next season.

Naturally, he wont come cheap. The Mirror suggest that he could cost as much as £54m. In other words, The Red Devils would have to smash their transfer record once again.

But given the current state of the club, this could be a necessary move. Alongside Juan Mata, the fans need a player that they can hang their hopes and dreams on. Edinson Cavani could well be that man.

What’s your take? Can Manchester United afford to sign Edinson Cavani?
