Are the Gunners still in the running to sign Luis Suarez?

Arsene Wenger was clearly on the hunt for a big money signing during the summer. We know that the Gunners made a £40,000,001 bid for Luis Suarez, that Liverpool laughed off. Having failed in their attempts to secure the Uruguayan, they moved on to Mesut Ozil, agreeing a £42.4m deal for the German superstar with Real Madrid.

Whilst Mesut Ozil’s arrival at the club has had a massive impact, I can’t help but wonder if Arsene Wenger wishes he had got his hands on Suarez instead.

After all, he’s far and away the best striker in the Premier League. In terms of his technical ability, there are very few who can match him. He may not be the most physically tough individual and he may have a rather wonky moral compass, but every other aspect of his game more than makes up for this.

Despite missing the first 5 games of the season, he’s already found the back of the net 23 times. He’s currently in the form of his life and is playing with real confidence and class. I hate to say it, but playing alongside Daniel Sturridge has also helped him. The two compliment each other well and are the main reason why the Reds have been so successful this season.

At a recent Press Conference Arsene Wenger was asked whether his club would go back in for Luis Suarez during the summer transfer window. Here is his reply:

“At the moment no, no. You sometimes have regrets when players who played for you score goals or do well somewhere else. But he was never our player, it is a situation that didn’t come off and that is it.” (Source: The Mirror)

Wenger’s reluctance is disappointing given Arsenal’s current need for a striker. The Gunners are short of options in this department and Suarez has the ability, quality and drive to take the club to the next level.

There’s no doubting that he’d cost an absolute fortune. But if Arsenal were to take a swing, there’s just no telling what they’d get in return. He could be the man who makes the Gunners into regular silverware winners.
