£250k-a-week for Toni Kroos? Has Manchester United’s spending got out of control?

Toni KroosSince joining Manchester United in the summer, David Moyes hasn’t exactly covered himself in glory. He’s struggled to motivate his troops, hasn’t been producing the requisite results and has watched as his reputation has been trod into the ground.

But one thing’s for sure: he hasn’t been afraid to spend the club’s money. Or, to be a little more precise, the Manchester United top brass haven’t been afraid to support the Scot financially.

It started with Moyes spending big on his ex-Everton charge, Marouane Fellaini, who unfortunately hasn’t been a particularly good fit for this Manchester United side.

He also targeted a big money move for Cesc Fabregas last summer. In the end, he ended up spending £37.1m on Juan Mata, a player who’s sure to help the club improve over the coming months. This in turn, was followed up by a bumper new wage package for Wayne Rooney, who will now be picking up £300k-a-week. This will cost Manchester United approximately £85m over the length of his contract.

It seems that Manchester United are the king of the big spenders. And if you believe the Papers, there’s more signings to come.

The Mirror recently ran a story suggesting The Red Devils are willing to offer Toni Kroos £250k-a-week to persuade him to leave Bayern Munich. He’s been a target for quite some time and I’m sure he’d be tempted by a wage packet that’s so big.

This begs the question: can Manchester United really afford to be so frivolous? Throwing money at a problem doesn’t always solve it. My fear is that if David Moyes is incapable of leading his men, all the new signings in the world won’t make a blindest bit of difference.

The Red Devils could feasibly be in a place where they’ve got players on huge wage-packages without any hope of Champions League football. This is both financially troublesome and also a major dampener when it comes to player morale.

I sincerely hope that David Moyes is able to turn things around, but what do Manchester United do if he’s not capable? Wouldn’t the smarter move be spending big on a top quality manager?

It would seem cruel to send Moyes packing after just a year in charge, but don’t Manchester United have standards to uphold? Wouldn’t it be cheaper and easier to replace the figurehead, rather than a tranche of players?

Either way, let’s hope that this mess gets cleared up in the summer. If the club can do it without making a series of financial gambles, then all the better.

What’s your take? Should Manchester United be pinching the pennies?
