Alex SongHaving just spent £37.1m on bringing Juan Mata to Old Trafford, one may be forgiven for assuming that David Moyes would now move on to assessing Manchester United’s defence. But if the Papers are to be believed, the Scot is still looking to bring in another midfielder to help lighten the load on the likes of Mata, Michael Carrick, Tom Cleverley et al.

Whilst they’ve been linked to a big money move for Toni Kroos, I wouldn’t be surprised if David Moyes steered clear of this one. He’d be another bank breaking signing and with so much work to do in other areas of the pitch this summer, I’m just not sure that would be financially feasible.

It may make sense to look at bringing in an affordable player to help shore up the midfield, provide some protection in front of the back four and help break up play when the opposition have the ball.

With Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand both seemingly on their way out, Jonny Evans and Chris Smalling are going to need all the help they can get.

Here’s where a player like Alex Song could help. The Mirror claim that the Barcelona defensive midfielder has his heart set on a return to the Premier League and also suggest that Manchester United have been sniffing around.

Since moving to the Nou Camp two summers ago, Song has made just 32 appearances for Barcelona. That’s a disappointing amount of game time for a player who had broken into Arsenal’s first team and looked to have the quality to excel in the Premier League.

Whilst Song had his detractors (he had a lack of defensive discipline and often loved to get forward and support the attack when perhaps he shouldn’t), it was clear enough that he’s a good player. He’s athletic, physically tough, positions himself well and has confidence when on the ball. He’s the type of player who can win the ball back and set up an attack in a matter of seconds.

I’m sure that Juan Mata (and co.) will appreciate having a midfield enforcer playing alongside them. Given that he’s surplus to requirements at Barcelona, I’m sure he won’t cost a fortune. This, for my money, makes him a good transfer target for Manchester United.

What’s your take? Should Manchester United really be interested in this ex-Arsenal star?
