Would this German duo provide a much needed fix for Manchester United?

Ilkay GundoganFrom the looks of things, Manchester United are already well on the way to recovery. David Moyes’ arrival at Old Trafford seemed to knock the club out of its stride. Motivation levels dwindled, belief evaporated and the players started turning in half-arsed performances.

Things have picked up this December, but David Moyes still wont be happy with his side’s current League position. This makes me wonder: will Manchester United splash some cash this January?

I certainly hope so. The club is starting to build-up momentum, but if United are to keep their form up, they’d do well to sign a world class player (or two). Just look at the effect that signing Mesut Ozil (a player that Manchester United should have targeted last summer) had for Arsenal. The Gunners looked like an entirely different side. That’s what The Red Devils need right now.

Give Me Sport recently ran an article suggesting that Manchester United should move in for two Borussia Dortmund midfielders. The players in question are wing-man Marco Reus and midfielder Ilkay Gundogan. I nodded along in agreement with this article, even as I noted that it would be more-or-less impossible for Manchester United to get their hands on both players.

Dortmund recently lost Mario Gotze to rivals Bayern Munich. They’re about to lose Robert Lewandowski. The German side just can’t afford to lose Reus and Gundogan as well.

Like Lewandowski, Gundogan does have his own awkward contract situation. With the tough, technically gifted midfielder unlikely to sign a new deal, he could well be available. If Manchester United are to target either of these players, then Ilkay Gundogan is the way to go.

Besides, it’s the centre of the park that The Red Devils most need to shore up. With Marouane Fellaini, Shinji Kagawa and Michael Carrick (who’s currently injured) failing to provide the goods, it’s time to start considering other options. Gundogan is an excellent passer, who thinks quickly, works hard and usually makes an impact every game. He’d be an excellent addition for Manchester United.

Manchester United’s last Dortmund swoop didn’t go down as well as hoped. Shinji Kagawa was one of the best players in the Bundesliga before moving to the Premier League. Since his arrival at Old Trafford he’s failed to make any kind of meaningful impact whatsoever. I’m sure that this wouldn’t be the case with Ilkay Gundogan. He has all the qualities he needs to make it on British soil.  I’ll certainly have my fingers crossed that David Moyes moves in for him this January.

I just won’t hold my breath when it comes to Marco Reus.

What’s your take? Should Manchester United target one of these Borussia Dortmund stars?
