Is it too late for Arsenal to snap up this Real Madrid ace?

Angel Di MariaThus far this season, the Gunners are exceeding expectation. The arrival of Mesut Ozil at the Emirates seems to have inspired the players, got the fans believing again and provided additional levels of motivation for Arsene Wenger.

With Arsenal regularly turning in impressive performances (except against the big boys), expectation levels have gradually risen. The club has gone without silverware since the 2005 FA Cup. This is their first chance in many years of actually delivering success on the pitch (rather than in the board-room).

As such, January will be an important time for the Gunners. Will Arsene Wenger look to strengthen his squad whilst the transfer window is open, or will he stick with what he’s got and cross his fingers?

I certainly hope so. The Gunners need to keep momentum up and starting beating the big clubs. Bringing in a world class player (or two), could help them to achieve this.

But what area will Arsenal look to strengthen? I can’t help but wonder if he’ll try to bring a winger in during the January transfer window. After all, the Gunners aren’t exactly spoiled for choice in this area. Gervinho was sold to Roma during the summer and both Theo Walcott, Lukas Podolski and Alex Oxlaide-Chamberlain have spent long periods of the season out injured.

As a result, Arsene Wenger has resorted to playing his central midfielders out wide (to varying degrees of success). It’s also worth noting that Walcott and Podolski could be used more down the centre as the season progresses.

Suffice to say, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Arsene Wenger move in for a winger this January. The Metro back this up by suggesting that Arsenal (and Manchester United and Tottenham) are all interested in Real Madrid’s talented wing-man, Angel di Maria. With the Argentine ace on the hunt for regular game time, he could well move on during the current transfer window.

But if Arsenal are genuinely interested, they’ll need to act quickly. It’s thought that Di Maria has had his head turned by Juventus. But until pen is put to paper, there’s still a chance.

Angel Di Maria is known for his probing crosses and the number of assists that he produces over the course of a season. He’d certainly improve this Arsenal side, so here’s hoping that Arsene Wenger is willing to take Juventus on this January.

What’s your take? Should Arsenal stay in the fight to sign Real Madrid’s Angel Di Maria?
