Serge GnabryArsenal’s 2-0 victory over Spurs during the third round of the FA cup, was notable not just because it was yet another victory over the club’s old rivals. It was enjoyable because there were a number of stories unfolding on the edge of the game, giving the entire match a rather unique flavour.

Take for instance, Theo Walcott playing and excelling in the striker position. Or Christian Eriksen being isolated out on the left wing. What about Emmanuel Adebayor’s no show? How about Walcott winding up the Spurs fans (by telling them the score) and being pelted with coins as a result?

Then there’s Serge Gnabry, an Arsenal youngster who was making only his 12th appearance for the club and playing in the biggest game of his career thus far. As it happened, he excelled, demonstrating his strength on the ball, his cool head and his willingness to run at players.

He also chipped in with a particularly smart assist, using Theo Walcott’s run to cut into the centre of the park, whip the ball past two sluggish Spurs defenders and set-up Santi Cazorla to slam the ball home. It was very mature stuff. The fact that Gnabry didn’t look out of place playing alongside the likes of Cazorla, Mikel Arteta and Tomas Rosicky (who mentored the youngster through the game very nicely) is very impressive.

It was a performance that cemented the fact that Serge Gnabry is a player who we should be keeping our eyes on. He’s just 18-years-old and at this rate, he’s going to develop into a very special player indeed.

So why is it then, that The Mirror claim he could be sold to Borussia Dortmund? They suggest that Gnabry has been lined up as a replacement for Robert Lewandowski, who’s on his way to Bayern Munich in the summer (that’s not exactly like-for-like, is it?).

I can’t help but feel that letting him go would be a mistake. His price-tag is only going to rise over the coming years.

But I do fear that Arsenal have themselves a Cesc Fabregas situation here. They’ve got a player with bags of potential, but strong connections to a different League. As a Germany U19 international, who spent 2006-11 playing for VfB Stuttgart, I’m sure he’ll hanker for a return to the Bundesliga at some stage.

Put it this way: if Borussia Dortmund do come knocking, I’m sure he’d have his head turned. It’s now up to Arsene Wenger and co. to play smart with his contract and give him a reason to stay in London!

What’s your take? Should Arsenal be working hard to keep Serge Gnabry?

He has just recently signed a five year contract at Arsenal. So, worst case scenario Arsenal need not worry about him leaving for another four years. BVB can show all the interest they like. It’s a bit like us showing interest in Suarez. It was only wishful thinking.
