Luuk De JongAccording to The Metro, Newcastle United are close to agreeing a loan deal for Dutch striker, Luuk De Jong. It’s also claimed that Alan Pardew has agreed to sign De Jong on a permanent basis, if he proves to be a success at St James’ Park. That should save any Loic Remy-style headaches that may arise in the future, if he goes on to capture the hearts of Newcastle fans.

We all know that the Magpies need another striker. With Papiss Demba Cisse failing to provide the goods, Alan Pardew needs to bolster his forward line. He also needs to start considering how he’s going to replace Loic Remy, when/if he returns to QPR in the summer.

Newcastle have a history with Luuk De Jong. The club first went in for the Dutchman in 2012, when they had a £10m bid waved away. I’m not surprised that they were interested at the time. During his three seasons at FC Twente, between 2009 and 2012, De Jong scored 59 goals in 119 games. That’s a remarkable return and it earned him a £12m move to Borussia Monchengladbach.

Unfortunately, he hasn’t been quite so prolific in Germany. In 31 appearances for the Bundesliga side, he has found the back of the net just 8 times.

But given the Magpies current situation, it wouldn’t surprise me if their interest was re-ignited. What’s more, given his current form, I also can’t help but wonder if a change of scenery would serve the Dutchman well. With Monchengladbach not really getting the most out of him at the moment, this could be a win-win for everybody involved.

I’m sure that most fans would like to see Newcastle wrap up a deal for QPR star Loic Remy. But given the moneyed nature of his paymasters, that may not be possible. If Rangers don’t want to sell, they can make life very difficult for Alan Pardew and co. In that sense, it’s smart to have options.

And as options go, Like De Jong is a good one. If this deal were to go ahead, he would be way more than Loic Remy’s sloppy seconds. He could be the man who fires the Magpies back up the Premier League table.

What’s your take? Would you like to see Newcastle wrap up a deal for Luuk De Jong, or would Loic Remy be the better option?
