Should Manchester United trigger this Spanish talent’s £50m release clause?

KokeWith the Juan Mata deal seemingly forthcoming, it may seem churlish to turn attention to yet another creative midfielder. But with the current state of Manchester United’s midfield, I wouldn’t be surprised if David Moyes chose to double-up in this department.

When Atletico Madrid midfielder Koke agreed a new contract with his current paymasters, it was seen as yet another defeat for Manchester United and David Moyes. The former Everton man spent much of last summer labouring away in the transfer window to little reward.

He chased targets like Cesc Fabregas, Thiago Alcantara and Ander Herrera without getting any of them to sign on the dotted line. Manchester United need a bit more creativity in their midfield, but both Sir Alex Ferguson and now David Moyes have failed to deliver new signings in this department.

After being linked to Koke for many months, the Spaniard signing a new Madrid deal was a little hard to take. It struck me and many others as further evidence that United just aren’t able to compete for the world’s best footballers any more.

But according to The Mirror, that may not be the case. There’s hope yet and there could well be some life left in the old dog.

The source suggests that Koke’s new deal, which includes a £50m release clause, ‘means nothing’ and that United could still seal a bumper deal that would bring him to Old Trafford. If the stories are true, then this could be a case of a player agreeing a new deal simply, so his club gets a big pay-out when they sell him on.

It could be viewed as a ‘thank you’ to the club that has helped him to develop to this stage.

Quite where that leaves Manchester United remains to be seen. There’s no talk as to how much Koke would cost the Red Devils, but he’d certainly break the bank. The 22-year-old is one of the most gifted footballers in La Liga and certainly looks destined for big things. He’s an integral part of a very impressive Madrid side and they won’t want to let him go without a fight.

Now would be as good a time as any for David Moyes to start showing some resolve. He knows he needs to bring in a creative talent and players like Koke aren’t exactly a dime a dozen. Hopefully he’s ready to make his mark this January and help turn Manchester United into a force once more. If Juan Mata joins, him , then all the better.

What’s your take? Is it too late for Manchester United to sign Koke?

Moyes, You will have yourself to blame, if it happens that you loss out to make a massive signing on this winter, Comfirm wanted players like Vidal or Mata & Ceontrao for a long loan or Shaw, then by summer tranfer you have to move for Mangala, Sandros & Barkley period.
