Are Manchester United really about to launch a £70m transfer spree?

|

David MoyesaManchester United fans were hoping that David Moyes would do something drastic and if the reports are true, he’s about to. According to The Mirror, the former Everton man is ready to embark on a £70m January spending spree that could propel the club back up the Premier League table.

The Red Devils have spent most of this year looking like half the team they were last season. The difference between a Manchester United team led by Sir Alex Ferguson and one led by David Moyes could not be more apparent.

Whether that’s due to his leadership or down to the players themselves is up to debate. What’s clear, however, is that the club needs to sign some new bodies and that Moyes needs to start building a team in his own image, rather than in that of his predecessor.

So let’s get back to that proposed £70m transfer spree. Who are the players on Moyes’ wishlist?

First up is Chelsea star, Juan Mata, who is slowly being squeezed out at Stamford Bridge. For one reason or another, Jose Mourinho doesn’t like the talented Spaniard and hasn’t been particularly keen to play him this season.

This has always struck me as Mourinho’s attempt to stamp his mark on this Chelsea side. It’s clear to everyone that Mata’s still a top player and he’d be a welcome addition at Old Trafford.

The Mirror suggest that he has a £40m price-tag, but he’s such a good fit for United that it may be worth spending big. The Telegraph suggest that a deal is all but done and that he’ll only set the club back £37m. Hm.

As it happens, it looks like United are about to get a double creativity burst. The Mirror article also links David Moyes to a £20m bid for Yohan Cabaye, who has been having a fantastic season for Newcastle (according to the aforementioned source, at least!)

Yes, Manchester United have struggled to find much cut and thrust this season, but adding both Cabaye and Mata to the squad would go a long way to fixing this.

That leaves £7m Bayern Munich defender Dante, who would add a bit of consistency to the club’s back four and £8.5m rated Borussia Monchegladbach winger, Patrick Hermann. The German wing-wizard would add some pace and threat down the flanks and could prove to be an astute purchase by David Moyes.

After whipping out my calculator, I’ve noticed that these four transfers would add up to at least £75.5m, a few million over figure proposed in the Mirror’s headline. Oh well, we’ll run with it.

David Moyes’ willingness to spend this kind of money would be a real sign of intent from the club. It’s just exciting to see Manchester United get linked to the kind of players who could make a major difference once more.

What’s your take? Will David Moyes be spending big this January?
