Eliaquim MangalaFinally, Manchester United fans have a reason to be cheerful. After a tough start, performances have started to pick up, the club is beginning to win games and the January transfer window has opened up. If David Moyes makes the right moves over the next month, he could well wipe away the misery that was rife earlier this season.

I’m not suggesting that Manchester United are ready to compete for the Premier Legaue title again. Unfortunately, that ship has already set sail. But if David Moyes plays his cards right, a top four finish is still on the cards. That would put the club in a decent position to challenge for honours next year.

As such, it’ll be interesting to see what Moyes does this January. Will he splash the cash and bring in a big signing, or will he opt to stick with what he has?

There’s been a lot of speculation regarding FC Porto defender, Eliaquim Mangala. The Frenchman recently spoke about his future and confessed that he’d love to play in the Premier League:

“You can have the best agent in the world, but if you are not outstanding on the pitch you will never join any great club. The Premier League? That is no secret, to me it is the most beautiful league in the world. Whatever the opponent, you know it will be a fight. The game is intense, it is fast, and everyone is giving his very best.” (Source: The Star)

He’s pretty effusive in his praise isn’t he? Given that Manchester United are known to be interested in the player, perhaps the time is right for the club to make a move?

Unfortunately for Manchester United, the 22-year-old wont come cheap. He’s one of the best regarded young centre-backs in world football. At his young age, he’s tough, strong in the air and quick along the ground. He’s also got a good reading on the game and knows how to position himself.

But nowadays you have to pay top dollar to get world-class players. Over the next couple of seasons, Mangala could blossom into one of the world’s best defenders. This is the kind of signing that would operate as a signal of intent for Manchester United. For that reason, I’ll certainly be keeping my fingers crossed during the January transfer window.

What’s your take? Should The Red Devils make a move for Eliaquim Mangala?
