Ilkay GundoganIt hasn’t been an easy season for Manchester United. David Moyes’ arrival at Old Trafford seems to have spun the club off his axis. Everything has gone topsy-turvy at Manchester United and the top brass are struggling to steady the ship.

By now it’s perfectly apparent that this Manchester United side isn’t good enough to compete for the Premier League. There’s too many aging legs and too much raw talent. The balance isn’t right. All in all, The Red Devils lack the creative edge that’s necessary to stand out at the top level.

The trouble now, is that it’s going to be difficult to fix things. The January transfer window is a notoriously difficult time to sign quality players (especially during a World Cup year) and Moyes didn’t exactly cover himself in glory during the summer. I get the feeling that the next couple of weeks are going to be a long, hard slog.

It’s for the reasons outlined above that Manchester United need to work overtime to draw up a list of suitable targets and pursue those who are good enough without prejudice. It’s time to get serious and start chasing the players who can make a real difference.

Take, for instance, Borussia Dortmund’s Ilkay Gundogan. I’m surprised that Manchester United haven’t made stronger attempts to sign this man. Doesn’t he have the perfect profile? He’s a gifted footballer, with quick feet and a bright mind. He has the technical ability to change games, can pick out gaps between defenders and find the back of the net when he’s in a position to do so.

To put it succinctly, he’s a world class talent. He’s certainly going to play an important role in a very impressive German international side over the coming years.

Given his contract situation (it’s up at the end of next season and he’s been dragging his feet over a new deal), United should be all over him. Unfortunately, it’s beginning to look likely that he will sign a new Borussia Dortmund deal. Check out this quote from the Bundesliga side’s sporting director, Michael Zorc:

“For Ilkay, the most important thing is that he gets well first. But we will soon have discussions with him and his family. We have a very good relationship with them.”

It’s still not too late for Manchester United to make things happen, but David Moyes will have to act fast. If the club sits still, it wont be long until stagnation kicks in.

What’s your take? Should Manchester United swoop in for Ilkay Gundogan?

Moyes should act fast else he’ll never going to cut it at man utd. He has got his team selection wrong most of the times. He should use Kagawa as the no 10 when he doesn’t have Rooney in the team and januzaj on the left to get more cutting edge in the game thus lessen the stress in midfield where they are la king at the moment. So sign a midfielder fast.
