Tomas RosickyNow that Theo Walcott has been added to Arsenal’s injury list, there is much discussion about which attacking players Arsène Wenger should bring in this January.

However, there is one signing closer to home that Wenger shouldn’t overlook this month. Thomas Rosicky will be a free agent this summer and there are already rumours that he will make a move to the MLS. After a few years plagued by a persistent injury, Arsenal fans have loved seeing him make regular appearances this season, capped off by his goal in the North London Derby last weekend.

Rosicky’s fantastic work rate has really stood out this season, shown on Saturday when he dispossessed Danny Rose just inside Tottenham’s half and went on to score. Once he had the ball, he couldn’t be stopped. He may be 33, but his speed and energy are that of a much younger player.

Wenger is notoriously reluctant to renew players’ contracts for more than a year once they reach 30. However, while Rosicky may not be able to start every match, he has made a significant impact when used as a substitute this season. Against Cardiff, he helped to transform the game in Arsenal’s favour, completing 18 out of 22 passes in his half-an-hour appearance.

When Rosicky joined Arsenal in 2006, he was nicknamed ‘Little Mozart’ and bought as a playmaker to replace Robert Pires. After missing almost two years of football with a hamstring problem, he has returned with renewed enthusiasm. His position has also changed from attacking playmaker to hardworking midfielder, which is a role in which he could continue being successful for at least one more season at the Emirates.

Rosicky always seems happy to be playing – perhaps grateful to be back after his long layoff. Whenever he’s on the pitch, there’s the feeling that he’s giving his all. This has made him popular with the Arsenal fans and, if his goal celebration against Tottenham is anything to go by, with his team-mates as well. After the consecutive departures of Cesc Fàbregas and Robin van Persie, Arsenal fans relish Rosicky’s commitment and enthusiasm.

His popularity and experience would also help to nurture Arsenal’s relatively young squad, especially with the emergence of talents such as Serge Gnabry.

With all this considered, it would be a big mistake for Wenger to let Rosicky leave at the end of the season.

What’s your take? Should Arsenal offer Tomas Rosicky a new contract?
