Could this £28m German ace be just the ticket for Tottenham?

ReusWintercupWant to know just how poorly Andres Villas-Boas did during the summer transfer window? Then consider how much of the focus this January has been on out-bound transfers, rather than new additions to this squad.

A lot of the talk has centered around Erik Lamela, Nacer Chadli and Etienne Capoue, players who were signed in the summer, but have struggled to make their mark. These three cost the club almost £47m between them, so it’s easy to see why Spurs fans are frustrated.

AVB and Daniel Levy tried gamely to replace Gareth Bale, but it’s clear that they failed. Now it’s up to Tim Sherwood to pick up the pieces.

Tim’s done a good job so far, but it’ll be interesting to see what he does during the January transfer window. I’m sure there’ll be some high profile exits, but will he also look to stamp his mark on the club with a major new signing of his own? I certainly have my finger’s crossed.

This brings me to The Mirror‘s claim that Spurs are competing for Borussia Dortmund’s Marco Reus. The German ace’s reputation has skyrocketed over the last two-or-three seasons and has attracted attention from the likes of Manchester United and Arsenal.

The source suggests that it’d cost upwards of £28m to convince his current pay-masters to sell. That’s a lot of money, but it’s still £2m less than the club shelled out for Erik Lamela.

We all know what Reus would offer this Tottenham side. The attacking midfielder has pace to burn, excellent technique and he’s also a force in front of goal. He scored 19 times last season and he’s already found the back of the net 12 times this year.

He’d add a smidgen of unpredictability to this Spurs side and could help the club to start competing against the Premier League big boys. Whilst he’s not quite as good as Gareth Bale, he could prove an able replacement for the Welshman. That’s more than can be said of most of AVB’s new recruits.

Whether Daniel Levy would sign off on a deal this big having already emptied out his wallet during the summer remains to be seen. Either way, it’s clear that signing Reus would be a smart step forward for a club who have found their pathway to success blocked in recent times.

What’s your take? Should Spurs make a move for this Borussia Dortmund superstar?

Really poor work. Firstly labelling players that AVB has been widely reported as not responsible for and then going on to link Spurs with a £28million player with zero sources. I hope this is just a hobby for you and not something you are considering as work!

  • Kevin says:

Mate, do you really think he’s going to move to Spurs? They’re not a champions league club and it’s doubtful they will be soon.

  • cyril says:

it is unbelievable how people who write at length about the idea of a director of football rthan ignore his presence in order to make a weak point stronger
baldini and levy bought, avb did not
levy has followed US sports models, works well for team sports that are really individual, eg baseball, but not for true team sports. avb can only coach what he is given. maybe he could have done a better job at that, but that is the debate. the debate is not wether he bopught well as he did not buy and so the article is largely pointless

    • fornenced says:

Actually the debate should be was HE any good at coaching. For me he was a conman and a fraud. He has taken compensation from two English Premiership clubs, but there’s still people who were fooled by him.

  • Clevespurs says:

Why is AVB still being blamed for a bunch of players he never wanted? Do you not remember we have a Director of Football, whose main role is to identify players and recommend them to the head coach (but on this occasion the coach was bypassed on route to the chairman)?
Harry, my advice to you is to stick to current facts. If you have aspirations on being a journalist, break the mould. If the story is about the prospect of a £28m German ace then, stick to the headlines. We Spurs fans are sick to the death of boring swipes at the first Manager that attempted to try something new.

Utter tripe again from The Mirror. In what alternate universe would Marco Reus possibly want to swap champs league football guaranteed annually, with the possibility of winning it in a tremendous team, for a scrap for top 4 with spurs. Don’t get me wrong, I would pay for this guys plane ticket with my own hard earned wonga if there was the slightest chance of us signing him, but it’s a cast iron pipe dream I’m afraid. So my fellow lily whites, hold off on your ejaculations indefinitely coz this is never gonna happen!!

  • gary fox says:

Three alleged failures…..all of whom have suffered with injuries and settling into a new team, country, system and two wildly different managers. If we sell any of these 3 at this stage then we are crazy. Its not a playstation game!

    • Scootdog says:

Totally agree mate. Bale took over a season to settle in and the rest is history. Every player should get at least a season to show their worth.

  • A Shaw says:

I couldn’t agree more with the previous two respondents, although you’re quite right as to Reus’ probable positive impact on the Team, should Spurs’ be able to get him…

  • Ro says:

…Why don’t we take his club or country manager as well and offer him 28 mil a season contract? quaranteed. coys!!!

  • Ray says:

As usual, yet another load of bollocks written by Harry Cloke (if that’s your real name).

  • George says:

The problem is Levy. Once he is out the club we can progress.
