Could this £1.5m Spurs deal be the bargain of the January transfer window?

Dimitar BerbatovTim Sherwood’s decision to recall Emmanuel Adebayor from the wilderness looks smarter and smarter by the day. Without the Togo international leading the line, Spurs looked a little lost.

Roberto Soldado has been slow to settle since his move from La Liga. His touch looks sluggish, he can be careless in possession and to say that he snatches at his shots would be an understatement. He was the man who was supposed to provide Spurs with a regular source of goals in Gareth Bale’s absence, but he just hasn’t been up to the task.

That’s let Emmanuel Adebayor back into the proceedings, where he looks freshly motivated, fired-up and ready to go. His brace against Swansea City at the weekend just further underlined what an asset he is is to this club.

Still, fans will acknowledge that it would be dangerous for Tottenham to rely on Adebayor. If he decides he’s simply not interested any more (which has happened on numerous occasions before), then his form will quickly dry up and Spurs may find themselves in a spot of bother. With Jermaine Defoe’s move to Canada, signing a striker should be Tim Sherwood’s biggest priority.

According to The Mirror, Spurs could be set for a ‘shock reunion’ with Dimitar Berbatov, a man who scored 46 goals in 102 games for the club between 2006 and 2009. After leaving White Hart Lane, Berba moved on to Manchester United, before ending up at Fulham where his career is starting to stagnate.

At 32-years-old, I’m sure he’s on the hunt for one last big contract. Spurs could offer him the opportunity to play football at a decent level again. I’m sure he’d rather play ahead of the likes of Christian Eriksen and Paulinho than Steve Sidwell and co.

The source suggests that this deal could take as little as £1.5m to wrap up. If that’s true, then it’s not exactly like it would be a costly gamble for Spurs to embark on. They need a striker and Berba is both a good and affordable option. Isn’t that a perfect match?

The article claims that Daniel Levy is keen on the deal, but that Tim Sherwood has reservations. In this case, I can’t help but hope that Levy gets his way. As a short-term option, Berbatov is about as good as they come.

What’s your take? Should Spurs make a move for this ex-star?

What if berba and ade feel lazy on the same day?

  • Peter Sorrell says:

Berbatov not only scores goals but links the play up too-Addibayor will love playing with him
.Yes Berba looks casual at times but that’s in his genes.
Will the fans want him back after the way he left us-once he scores goals YES-GO GET HIM LEVY!!!!

  • leethfc says:

No no no no we do not wantv him this is typical levy penny pinching we do not want him hence you don’t see a dog going back to its vomit do you berbatov go somewhere else

  • Hotspur says:

Berbatov let the Spurs fans down the way he departed and I’ve never been keen on the thought of his return. However, we do require another striker, he has a proven track record and he is very CHEAP at 1.5m. I think he may be worth a punt at that price. But I also feel we should be looking to the youth as well, give Harry Kane a go ? What about the young Coulibaly ? Whatever the choice it should be completely with Sherwoods backing, let the manager make his choices, his gut instinct has been pretty good so far. COYS !!!!!!

  • Jo says:

Yeah – like the £1.5m bargain Holtby was this time last season!

    • Dan says:

Lewis will still turn out to be a good bit of business. He will either stay and come good or we will sell him on for a tidy profit. I hope he stays. I like the guy.

  • jonny says:

Not disputing his talent but does spurs need another slow striker? Most of our goals of late have come from counter attacks but would love goals from set pieces which is where berba could step in.

  • oliver says:

It’s always a gamble when you get players from abroad! Berbatov is a proven striker in the prem! Would be stupid not to get him for that price.

  • tony n says:

yes and we will make a profit if we ever part company (which I hope we do not – I think Holtby is ready to become a phenomenal asset). The return of Berby will prove to be a good one. I love the return to an attack minded mentality but you need someone to put it in the net-very few did it as sweetly as Berby with the cockarel on the badge-lets have a curtain call or two

The very thought of Berb coming back to the Lane, after he dismissed Tottenham so nastily 6 years ago after we gave him (this Bundesliga journeyman striker) the opportunity to develop his skills in the PL, fills me with disgust. He would have been as big a hero as Keane or any Spurs hero if he’d stayed with us, but this is not like Klinsmann, Robbie or Teddy coming back to a club they have affection for. Berbatov doesn’t love Tottenham ..or even like us. He just loves himself, and you can see that in his superior attitude at Fulham. The irony is that if we’d taken him back a couple of years ago, instead of him going to Fulham, and we’d passed on Dempsey, then (in footballing terms) we’d probably be in the CL now. But the very thought still grates ..and taking him now would just compound what might have been!

  • CPH says:

Not for me. Berbatov at 32 is not what we want at this stage, its stopgap management so favoured by Levy.He left us for a payday and wants another one at the end of his career. Is this what Levy means when he talks of ‘taking Tottenham to another level’ the whole thing smacks of desperation. Keep him away from us please.

  • Alan says:

NO NO NO.NEVER COME BACK TO SPURS.LAZY LAZY LAZY NO GOOD

    • Ray says:

I would not hesitate in buying him- a bargain buy- when we played them last he still looked a class above any of our players!

  • Jo says:

The spirit of ‘Arry lives on – but back a player who is years past his best.
Talk about settle for being average.
After all the pre-seson hype, we’ve nestled back to being also-rans

  • Stan says:

We need a left back just as much as a striker.
