Should Spurs turn to Serie A to solve their striker problem?

Mirko VucinicThe 3-2 victory over Southampton could not have come at a better time for Spurs. With Andre Villas-Boas’ forced exit from the club, the players struggling to gel and the results not coming, Tottenham are slap-bang in the middle of a rough period in their history. Let’s hope that victory over the Saints will be a turning point.

The fact that Emmanuel Adebayor has re-found his shooting boots will certainly help. But we all know that he’s the kind of player who tends to turn up one day and go missing the next. He needs a lot of motivation to turn in a top level performance. I don’t think Spurs can build a successful season on this basis.

I’m sure that signing another striker during the January transfer window will be a priority for whoever is in charge.

According to a story run by The Star, Tottenham are in the hunt to sign Juventus’ highly-regarded striker, Mirko Vucinic. The source has even slapped an ‘EXCLUSIVE’ tagline, on the story, so it must be true, right?

I certainly hope that there’s some truth to the story. After all, Vucinic not only has a decent record, he also seems to be custom built for the Premier League.

The 30-year-old is a rough and rugged forward, strong on the ball and confident in front of goal (25 goals in 86 appearances thus far for Juventus). He’s also a good reader of the game and links up well with his team-mates. I think he’d cause Premier League defenders plenty of trouble.

At the moment, both Vucinic and Carlos Tevez are keeping Fernando Llorente (who you may remember as the man who knocked Manchester United out of the Europa League a few seasons ago, when he was still at Athletic Bilbao) out of the Juventus first team.

With Roberto Soldado struggling to make his mark at White Hart Lane, it’s time to start considering other options. If Mirko Vucinic is available, he could well be an excellent choice.

But it’s not like Vucinic is top dog in Turin. If Tottenham were to come knocking and were to offer a fair sum of money, then this deal could well go ahead. I’ll certainly be keeping my fingers crossed.

What’s your take? Should Spurs be keeping tabs on Mirko Vucinic, or should they be considering other options?
