Blimey. Manchester United are well and truly in crisis mode now, aren’t they?
The games come thick and fast over the Christmas period and David Moyes’ side just doesn’t seem capable of keeping up.
It’s been a while since I’ve seen a United team so devoid of ideas, creativity and craft. I can see the players plugging away, trying to make things happen, but I’m struggling to see that spark of inspiration at the moment.
Actually I should clarify: United do have two players who are capable of creating little moments of magic. Unfortunately, they are both strikers. Wayne Rooney and Robin Van Persie simply can’t be expected to do all the work for the team. They need better, quicker service from the midfield.
Rooney works his ass off every week and it’s depressing to see him get increasingly frustrated. If he was unhappy last summer, I can only imagine how he’ll feel in a few months time.
United need to turn things around and quick. They need a midfield Rooney, or a midfield RVP. If they don’t find him in January, they may well have to go without Champions League football next year.
But who should they look at?
How about former Chelsea reserve, Nemanja Matic? (Source: The Mirror)
It may sound a little odd to suggest that Manchester United get on the trail of a player Chelsea sent packing a few years back. But since Matic joined Benfica back in 2011, he’s come a long way.
Last year was his best season yet. Last July he was named the Primeira Liga Player of the Year, having won the monthly award three times (in December 2012, January 2013 and April 2013). He’s a hard worker, a tough tackler and a smart footballer.
He’s extremely combative and isn’t afraid of the physical side of the game. Best of all, once he’s won the ball back, he knows how to use it. He can spread the play and find gaps in between defenders. He’d make an excellent addition to this United side.
It’s thought that he’d cost £20m. That’s a lot of money, but it’s not as much as United would have to spend on the likes of Sami Khedira. Indeed, I can’t help but feel that it would be the first smart move David Moyes has made as Manchester United boss.
What’s your take? Should United be in the market for Nemanja Matic, or should they go after somebody with a more creative outlook?
