Alex SongFor one reason or another David Moyes appears to be chasing another defensive, or holding midfielder. Since the summer we’ve heard a lot of rumours concerning Real Madrid’s Sami Khedira. In recent times, the club has also been linked to Benfica’s midfield dynamo, Nemanja Matic.

Whilst the whole world can see that United need to sign another creative midfielder, Moyes seems to be intent on doing things his way.

My guess is that he wants to sign a defensive midfielder who can free up the likes of Michael Carrick, Shinji Kagawa and Marouane Fellaini to play further up the pitch. At the moment Fellaini and Kagawa’s performances are too stilted and slow to reap dividends. Providing them with some protection could actually be a step forward for the club.

But I’d rather David Moyes didn’t splash the cash on players with price-tags as big as Sami Khedira’s. Whilst I understand the logic behind signing a defensive midfielder, David Moyes will still need to splash the cash on a creative central midfielder (and potentially an effective winger?).

As such, I hope Moyes is drawing up a list of bargain options. This brings me to The Mirror‘s claim that Manchester United are on the trail of former Arsenal star, current Barcelona bench warmer, Alex Song. They suggest that the Cameroonian international could be available for as little as £10m. That’s a relatively small fee for a man with as much pedigree as Song.

Since leaving the Emirates back two summers ago, Alex Song has struggled to make his mark at the Nou Camp. He’s currently behind the likes of Sergio Busquets and Javier Mascherano in the defensive hub of Barcelona’s midfield. I’m not sure why he even bothered moving to Spain in the first place.

His big move may have failed, but he’s still a good player. He’d also come with a decent amount of Premier League experience. Song’s a natural ball winner, strong in the tackle and quick along the ground. He’s also pretty handy when it comes to linking up with strikers. Indeed, during their respective time at Arsenal, Song and Robin Van Persie managed to form a pretty effective partnership.

I’d quite like to see the two of them reunited at Old Trafford. Signing Song wouldn’t break the bank, but it may just provide the defensive stability the club needs.

What’s your take? Should Manchester United move in for this former Arsenal mainstay?
