Xabi AlonsoThe moment is finally at hand. The January transfer window is about to swing open. Manchester United fans rejoice!

Things have been tough so far for The Red Devils. David Moyes’ arrival at the club has thrown a real spanner in the works. The players seem to have lost confidence, the manager seems to be espousing backwards tactics and the team as a whole isn’t working as a unit.

As it happens, things have certainly got better over the last couple of weeks. Manchester United are grinding out results and putting together a run of games.

It’s up to David Moyes to keep this momentum up. How better to do this than by making one or two smart signings during the January transfer window?

It’s still clear that Manchester United’s midfield isn’t pulling its weight at the moment. There’s too much pressure on United’s classy strikers to provide results, when they’re receiving very little in the way of service from their midfield.

The likes of Marouane Fellaini, Shinji Kagawa, Tom Cleverley and Ryan Giggs just aren’t providing the goods. I wouldn’t be surprised if the top brass decided to freshen things up in this area.

According to Sports Witness, Manchester United are in the running to sign a big name, creative midfielder. The player in question is Real Madrid’s Xabi Alonso.

It’s thought that the ex-Liverpool star fancies a change of scenery and would be willing to move to Old Trafford, if United are willing to meet his high wage-demands.

Luckily, his Real Madrid contract is scheduled to expire during the summer. A free transfer seems like a fair trade-off for his high wage demands. This is especially true given what he could offer this Manchester United side.

Xabi Alonso is still one of the best passers in world football. He’s got an expert reading of the game and the ability to quickly and efficiently find the gaps in between defenders. More so than any other option out there, I think Xabi will be capable of helping United’s strikers to start firing on all cylinders.

This move would would certainly irk Liverpool fans, which would be another reason to support it. There’s also a chance that this deal could happen during the January transfer window, if United are willing to offer Madrid a small transfer fee. Given the club’s clear and present need, I can’t help but feel that this would be the right step forward for the club.

What’s your take? Should Manchester United move in for this former Liverpool star?
