Marco BorrielloWhilst Daniel Levy’s stock may be pretty low at the moment, I can’t wait to see how he responds in the January transfer market. The club seems to have reached its nadir, which means it’s up to him to help pull it out of the doldrums. It was Levy, after all, who created the power vacuum at the top of the club. It’s up to him to fill it.

I’d have liked to have seen Andre Villas-Boas get another transfer window to prove himself. As that won’t be the case, we’ll have to cross our fingers and hope that whoever’s in charge of the club’s purse strings this January makes good decisions.

This brings me to the following news: according to The Mirror, Spurs are keen on Roma star Marco Borriello. The Italian club may well harbour plenty of good feeling for Tottenham, who gave them £30m for Erik Lamela during the summer. That’s an awfully large sum of cash for a player who has had a rather limited impact (thus far, at least).

At the moment Borriello is struggling for game time at the Italian capital. He’s played just 11 times this season, many of which were as a substitute. His representative has made it fairly clear that he fancies a change of scenery:

“Marco is very happy in Rome and with Roma, but clearly the recovery of Francesco Totti and Mattia Destro from injury is reducing his space and he’d like to play more. His profile is very much appreciated in England, as they are looking for players like this.

Being here in London I had the chance to talk to various clubs. Tottenham? Yes, they were among them.”

It’s clear that there’s some truth to the rumours. Spurs desperately need to sign another striker to help support Roberto Soldado (and Emmanuel Adebayor?). Marco Borriello could be the answer.

He’s never exactly been a prodigious goal-scorer, but he has shown flickers of what he’s capable of. 15 goals in 35 games for Milan back in 2009/10. 17 goals for Roma the next season. 12 goals in 28 games for Genoa in 2012/13. These are pretty impressive returns.

If Borriello finds his feet in the Premier League, he could prove to be just what Tottenham need. Now let’s see if Daniel Levy and co. can thrash out this deal.

What’s your take? Should Tottenham sign Marco Borriello, or consider other options?
