Should Brendan Rodgers swoop up this cut-price £17m Argentine midfielder?

Javier PastoreLiverpool’s title charge has wilted slightly over the course of the last four or so games. Arsenal certainly managed to put a dampener on proceedings with a comprehensive 2-0 victory over Brendan Rodger’s boys.

Yes, the Reds picked themselves up with a 4-0 thrashing of Fulham, but they’ve since been pegged back in the Merseyside derby and registered a shock 3-1 defeat at the hands of Hull City. This is not the form of potential title winners. Something has to give.

Despite bringing in a number of players this summer, Brendan Rodgers recently opted to bemoan his squad’s lack of strength in depth. Check out these quotes:

“There’s no doubt our quality in our squad, with all due respect, isn’t big enough to cope with two big players like that missing. This period now will test us… For the players who come in, it will be a great opportunity to stake their place in the team and hopefully we can get back to winning games.”

The two players in question are Daniel Sturridge and Philippe Coutinho. Alongside Luis Suarez and Steven Gerrard, these are Liverpool’s most important non-defensive players.

So if Rodgers really wants to improve the strength in depth of his squad, he needs to sign players of this calibre.

This brings me to The Mirror‘s claim that Liverpool are in the running to sign Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Javier Pastore.

The 24-year-old earned his reputation at Palermo, where he scored 14 goals in 44 appearances. That well and truly earned him a move to cash-rich PSG, where he continued to find the back of the net with alarming regularity. Unfortunately, it’s been downhill for him ever since.

Thus far this season he has 0 goals and 0 assists in 9 appearances for PSG.

It’s thought that he could be available for just £17m, which is £18m cheaper than his 2011 price-tag. As such, if he were able to find his feet in the Premier League, recover his form and get back to his best, he could end up being one of the best signings that Rodgers has ever made.

It’s not like Pastore’s reputation is in tatters. It’s clear he’s still a good player. There’s just too much competition around him at PSG and he seems to have lost his confidence. With players like Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Ezequiel Lavezzi and Edinson Cavani around him, it’s easy to see why he may have been forced out of the spotlight.

A change of scenery would probably serve the Argentine well. It’s an expensive gamble for Liverpool to take, but it’s one that could pay-off big. Let’s see if Brendan Rodgers is ready to roll the dice.

What’s your take? Should Liverpool move in for this out-of-luck PSG star?
