Should Arsenal break the bank for this Argentine ace?

FArsenal’s 1-1 draw with Everton at the weekend has taken some of the sheen off of what has been a wonderful season for the Gunners. Arsene Wenger’s team has brushed aside most of the opposition placed in front of it and put in a number of top drawer performances against the likes of Napoli, Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool.

But they spent most of their home fixture against the Toffees looking second best. Everton’s performance was energetic, direct and effective. They earned their draw and probably just about deserved a win. With Ross Barkley running the midfield, the Gunners were second to every ball and unable to exert their dominance on proceedings.

Could this be a sign that fatigue is beginning to creep into the Arsenal camp? Whilst they probably have the best first team in the Premier League (they certainly have the best midfield), their squad is pretty thin.

This is particularly true given the injuries they’ve faced this season. The club has had to make do for large swathes of the year without Alex Oxlaide-Chamberlain, Theo Walcott, Lukas Podolski, Santi Cazorla and, of course, Abou Diaby. These are all top professionals who would have had a major role to play.

With Olivier Giroud playing alone upfront, Arsenal are beginning to look a little stretched. It really wouldn’t surprise me if Arsene Wenger opted to bring in one or two more bodies during the January transfer window.

If he does, then I hope he opts to build on the good will that the Mesut Ozil deal has bought the club by signing another world-class talent. This brings me to The Mirror‘s claim that Arsenal are trailing Paris Saint Germain forward Ezequiel Lavezzi.

The Argentine has struggled for first team opportunities since the arrival of Edinson Cavani at Paris and may fancy a change of surroundings. Check out these quotes from the man himself:

“I do not know [what will happen in the future]. A player never knows exactly all these things. But what I can tell you is that I will do everything to change my situation in Paris because I did not give my best shot and I do not want this to continue.”

Last season Lavezzi played 42 games, scored 11 goals and notched 8 assists. He regularly accrued similar statistics during his time at Napoli. The man has some pedigree.

It’s clear he’d make an excellent addition to this Arsenal side. But he certainly wont come cheap. If Arsene Wenger has an interest, he’ll have to shell out a lot of money. Let’s see if he’s prepared to do so.

What’s your take? Should Arsenal move in for Ezequiel Lavezzi?
