Have Arsenal already agreed their first deal of the January transfer window?

Alvaro MorataSince the season begun, it’s been clear enough that Arsenal need another striker. It’s an issue that probably should have been dealt with during the summer transfer window and will continue to have ramifications throughout the rest of the year.

It’s not like Arsene Wenger was unaware of just how few options he has upfront. That’s surely why the Frenchman signed Yaya Sanogo (a striker from Ligue 1 with a rough injury record, who just so happens to be injured at the moment) and went in for Chelsea’s Demba Ba on deadline day.

But it seems he was too busy forcing through a deal for Real Madrid star Mesut Ozil, to bring in a striker who could provide competition (and support) for Olivier Giroud.

Giroud has been battling away all season, giving his all in every game. He throws himself into challenges, covers a lot of the pitch and gets involved physically at every possible opportunity. By the end of each game he looks absolutely knackered.

But Arsenal can’t really turn to anybody else. It’s not like Nicklas Bendtner can be relied upon to put in a performance.

So it’ll be interesting to see what actions Arsene Wenger takes in the January transfer window. By now it’s clear enough that something needs to be done.

According to numerous sources, including The Metro, Arsenal have already agreed a deal to sign another Real Madrid player. No, it’s not Karim Benzema, as you may expect, it’s his understudy, Alvaro Morato, who has also attracted attention from Spurs in recent months.

Whilst he’s a tidy player, it’s difficult to see him ever getting a proper look in at the Bernabeu. But this mooted six month loan deal to Arsenal will provide him with an opportunity for regular first team football at a top club. At the rate things are going, he could even end up with a Premier League winner’s medal.

He may not be the Real Madrid player that Arsenal fans really want, but as a short-term solution, he’d be a decent choice. It’s notoriously difficult to bring in top players during the January transfer window. With the Morata deal in place, Wenger would be able to wait until January to resolve his striker conundrum.

It’s certainly not going to cost the club too much. Maybe it’s time for Arsenal to start playing the long-game?

What’s your take? Would signing Alvaro Morata be a good move for striker-shy Arsenal?
