Over the last year or so, Liverpool have regularly been linked to Barcelona star Cristian Tello.
I’m not surprised to see these links resurface following a string of disappointing results for Brendan Rodger’s team.
The 2-0 defeat by Arsenal seems to have triggered a crisis of confidence among Liverpool players. They were thoroughly outplayed by the Gunners and seem a little shock-up as a result.
Yes, they turned over Fulham 4-0, but just about any side could do that at the moment. The 3-3 draw with Everton and 3-1 defeat by Hull City seem to be more telling results.
At the moment, the Reds are suffering from a mini-slump. The hope will be that it doesn’t grow into something bigger.
In this regard, it’s up to Brendan Rodgers to attempt to steady the ship. He’ll need to motivate his troops, boost morale and get the fans back on side. If he does this well, a top four finish could still be possible.
But with Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City, Manchester United, Everton, Southampton and Tottenham also competing for top four slots, I can’t help but feel that Brendan Rodgers still has some spending to do this year.
That’s where players like Cristian Tello comes in. When the January transfer window re-opens, the Barcelona ace could well be at the top of Brendan’s wish-list.
Tello has been having problems of his own this season. Even when he’s not struggling with injury problems, Gerardo Martino hasn’t been giving him much of a run-out at the Nou Camp. He’s made 10 appearances thus far this year, many of which were as a substitute.
This is clearly a source of frustration for the youngster. Check out these quotes from Tello himself:
“You wait and see how the season goes and if by the end I do not play what I want, I will raise out. Taking that step will be quite difficult but I think we appreciate the role of each. As the years pass you want the role change and have more minutes.”
The seemingly badly translated quotes come from The Star, who suggest that Tello is still a target for Liverpool. Given his current situation, I’d say it’s the perfect time for Brendan Rodgers to test the waters.
With his career in the balance, I’m sure Barcelona will play fair with his price-tag. The hope will be that he finds his feet, finds his form and starts delivering on his promise. If that happens, he could help transform this Liverpool side into something very special indeed.
