Could these two transfer deals help take Liverpool to the next level?

Will HughesWhat a treat for Liverpool fans to have spent Christmas day on top of the Premier League table. Sure, it’s tight at the top at the moment, but the fact that the Reds are where they are is a sign of the progress that Brendan Rodgers has made with this team.

When the ex-Swansea City boss arrived at Anfield, Liverpool were something of a laughing stock. He’s now transformed the Reds into a team that’s capable of challenging for the title this season. What a turnaround.

Better yet, he’s building for the future, even as he’s starting to deliver success in the present tense. Just witness the way that he’s replaced the aging Pepe Reina with Simon Mignolet. What’s more, it looks like he’s easing out Daniel Agger (who remains a Liverpool hero), with new addition Mamadou Sakho. Both Mignolet and Sahko have had excellent debut seasons and have played a key role in driving the Reds up the table.

This begs the question: what work does Brendan Rodgers have left to do? Will Liverpool be active during the January transfer window?

This Liverpool team certainly isn’t perfect. If Brendan is looking towards the future, he’d do well to look at two pressing issues: replacing Steven Gerrard and looking for a replacement for Luis Suarez, in case he opts to move on.

Yes, I realise that Luis Suarez has just signed a new deal, but I think it would be foolish to assume that he’ll stay at Anfield forever. How long will it be until Real Madrid swoop in and offer the Reds an eye-wateringly large sum?

As for Stevie G, the time’s right to start finding somebody who can influence play in the same way that he does. I’m not sure that either Joe Allen or Jordan Henderson are up for the job. Yes, Philippe Coutinho looks like one for the future, but he and Steven Gerrard have completely different playing styles.

Metro columnist, ‘This is Anfield‘, recently suggested that Brendan Rodgers should look at Olympiakos striker, Konstantinos Mitroglou and Derby County’s ace midfielder, Will Hughes, to help deal with these issues.

Both individuals are players who would be able to immediately make their mark in the first team, but they’re also likely to improve rapidly over the coming years.

Mitroglou is experiencing his breakout season for club and country. Now that he’s full of confidence and has proven his goal-scoring credentials, I’d say that he’s ready for a move to a big club. As a second or third choice striker, he’d be an excellent option for Liverpool.

Then there’s Will Hughes, the little, blonde midfielder who models his game on Andres Iniesta and Xavi. The English midfielder could blossom into a very special talent indeed. He’s the kind of player I’d love to see at Anfield, simply because he’s got so much potential. Under Steven Gerrard’s tutelage, he’d have every chance of becoming the player he wants to be.

All in all, these two would make excellent additions to an already impressive Liverpool side. I only hope that Brendan Rodgers is ready and willing to continue his winning streak in the transfer market.

What’s your take? Would this Liverpool double-swoop deal be another step forward for the club?
