Can Arsenal really compete for this £32m goal-scoring ace?

|

Diego CostaThere’s a reason why Liverpool went in so hard for Diego Costa over the summer. The man is a genuine talent. I expect we’ll be hearing a lot more about the Brazilian over the coming years.

At the time, I’m sure Brendan Rodgers was concerned by the potential loss of Luis Suarez. The Uruguayan spent all summer fluttering his eyelashes at the likes of Arsenal and Real Madrid (thank goodness that is over). Diego Costa would have been a good replacement, had it come to that.

That’s why the Liverpool hierarchy were willing to shell out £20m for him during the last transfer window. I’m sure that any club that goes in for him now will have to offer his club, Atletico Madrid, considerably more than that.

They’ll also need to be very persuasive. When news of Liverpool’s interest became apparent, Costa was quick to make his intentions clear: He also proved to be a man of his words, signing a new long-term Atletico Madrid deal.

Arsene Wenger may well have to work the same magic he used to sign Mesut Ozil. It will also help if the club manage to create an offer for the player that is too good for Madrid to turn down. Whilst it would be easier if the player were agitating for a move, that’s not to say that a deal can’t be made.

The Gunners just need to be willing to meet the player’s £32m release clause.

Having just spent £42.4m on Mesut Ozil, Arsenal may not have enough money left in the bank to see a deal of this magnitude through. But if the money-men can scrape the pennies together, it would represent a massive step forward. As it happens, The Standard claim this deal could be within Arsenal’s financial wheelhouse.

Unlike the rather limited Olivier Giroud, Costa has plenty of facets to his game. The Brazilian is a genuine flair player who isn’t afraid to take defenders on, work the space in behind and get into dangerous positions. Best of all, he’s deadly in front of goal. He’s already scored 22 goals in 21 games this season.

That’s not too bad, eh? I know that I’ll have my fingers crossed during the January transfer window.

What’s your take? Can Arsenal afford to compete for Diego Costa? Would the Brazilian be interested in a move to the Emirates?
