Angel DiMariaManchester United fans, what would you like to hear first: the good news or the bad news?

As both options are of little consequence, we’ll start with the ‘bad’, before applying the soothing balm of the ‘good’.

According to The Star,  Manchester United’s interest in Sami Khedira has hit a pretty significant road-block. The Red Devils were thought to be interested in the combative midfielder, who doesn’t seem particularly well settled at the Bernabeu.

Unfortunately, Khedira was injured in Germany’s 1-1 draw with Italy last Friday. It was a bad one too, as the 26-year-old tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee. Within a matter of days he had undergone a successful operation and now faces a six month convalescence period.

It’s perhaps not all that surprising, therefore, that United aren’t keen to snap him up. Given his current state, he’s unlikely to be a January target.

Whilst I’m sure some fans will be disappointed, it’s certainly not the end of the world. Khedira is a good player, but let’s not forget that he is a holding midfielder, with a defensive mindset. He shares a lot of similarities with Marouane Fellaini and could not really be relied upon to provide the creative spark that United need.

The same cannot be said of his Real Madrid team mate, Angel Di Maria. We’ve finally arrived at the good news. The Star suggest that Khedira’s injury could force David Moyes to step up his interest in Di Maria.

With Ashley Young, Shinji Kagawa and (to a lesser extent) Antonio Valencia failing to produce the goods, United could use a winger with a proven track record. In La Liga, Di Maria is known as ‘The Assist King’. That’s probably because he tallied up 48 assists in his first three years at the Bernabeu.

I’m sure David Moyes will be looking at his statistics and wondering why his midfielders can’t conjure up similar figures. Angel Di Maria just seems to have a natural connection to his team-mates.

His passing is quick and accurate, he reads the game well and he’s got an excellent cross on him. These are certainly qualities that United could use at this moment in time.

There’s no word as to how much he may cost, but he certainly won’t come cheap. Let’s see if Moyes is ready to loosen the purse strings.

What’s your take? Would Angel Di Maria fit in nicely at Old Trafford?
