Should Spurs really be moving in for this £20m midfield ace?

Everton FCWhilst Spurs don’t exactly seem to be crying out for another midfield talent, Andre Villas-Boas still needs to assess each potential target as and when they arise.

The sale of Gareth Bale sent Tottenham into a spending frenzy, where they picked up a number of top midfielders, including Paulinho and Christian Eriksen. When you add these signings to existing midfielders, Lewis Holtby, Moussa Dembale and Sandro, it’s clear enough that Tottenham are strong in this area.

But I think it’s still fair to say that this midfield would struggle against the top teams (like Arsenal, Manchester United, Chelsea, etc). It’s still missing that little bit of quality that can make a difference during tight games.

Spurs have a lot of midfielders who are either technically gifted, or physically tough. What they seem to lack, however, is a box-to-box midfielder, who’s willing to run his arse off for the cause.

Step forward Everton star and English youngster, Ross Barkley. At just 19-years-old, Barkley has spent the last year or so in the spotlight. His rise to prominence seems to have been instant, but his reputation isn’t unearned.

He’s a powerhouse footballer who’s strong in the air and along the ground, difficult to dispossess and handy whilst on the ball. He’s a neat passer, a strong tackler and a presence in front of goal. I view him as something of an all rounder and a player who’s only going to get better as the years progress.

His speedy development has seen him recieve a call-up to Roy Hodgson’s England team. I think it’s fair to say that he’s worth keeping an eye on.

CaughtOffside recently slapped a £20m price-tag on him and claimed that Tottenham were ‘the latest side to take an interest’.

£20m is a lot of money (especially when Spurs also need to sign another striker), but given his importance to Roberto Martinez, he’s simply not going to come any cheaper. If Andre Villas-Boas is serious about snapping up this talented youngster, he’s going to have to put his money where his mouth is.

Besides, it’s an investment for the future. He’s going to develop into a world-class player. As such, now’s the time to get him over to White Hart Lane.

What’s your take? Should Spurs really be chasing another midfielder? Would Ross Barkley improve this Tottenham side?
