Andre AyewBefore Liverpool’s showdown with Arsenal at the weekend, all the talk focused on the Reds’ attack and the Gunners midfield. Who would win out, Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge or Santi Cazorla, Aaron Ramsey and Mesut Ozil?

In the end, the answer was crystal clear. The technical mastery of Arsenal’s midfielders allowed them to control the game. The service into the likes of Sturridge and Suarez was negligible and Liverpool struggled to provide them with support moving forward.

In the end, Arsenal’s 2-0 victory was a fair result. Liverpool are now 5 points behind the Gunners in the title race.

It’s clear that they need to sign another creative midfielder. That’s the area of the squad in which they are weakest. But I also can’t help but feel that the Reds should invest in another striker.

This would provide Suarez and Sturridge with the competition and the motivation they need to perform on a weekly basis. After all, if they didn’t produce the performance level required of them, there’d be somebody waiting in the wings to take their place.

According to The Mirror, Liverpool have been keeping a watchful eye on Marseille’s Andre Ayew.

Ayew is a versatile forward, who’s plays as a winger at club level and a striker at International level (he plays for Ghana, despite having been born in France).

Back in 2011 he was named the BBC African Footballer of the Year. This goes to show how highly rated he is. The Ghanaian has bags of pace, quick feet and a willingness to run at defenders (he is a converted winger after all). On his day he can be extremely effective indeed.

Ayew has just 18 months left on his Marseille contact. It’s thought that he could be available for £10m.

As such, Liverpool wouldn’t exactly have to break the bank to sign him. If Brendan Rodgers is interested, it looks like there’s a deal to be done.

Given his versatility, I’d say that Ayew would be a good fit for this Liverpool side. He can stand in for Sturridge and Suarez when necessary, but he can also play out wide. Liverpool need a bit more cut and thrust down the wings and Ayew could certainly provide them with that.

Liverpool could face competition from Newcastle, but I’m sure Anfield will have more pull than St James’ Park. Let’s hope so anyway.

What’s your take? Would Andre Ayew be a good addition to this Liverpool squad?
