kostas-mitroglou-hairstyles11If Brendan Rodgers plays his cards right, this could be Liverpool’s year. Things have been going swimmingly thus far, but the cracks are already starting to show.

With clubs like Manchester United, Chelsea and Manchester City failing to find any consistency, Arsenal and Liverpool have been able to profit. The Gunners and the Reds have clambered up to the top of the Premier League table and they both look like the teams to beat this season.

But the disappointment of a 2-0 Liverpool defeat at the hands of Arsenal still lingers in the memory. That game showed that the Gunners are currently far and away the better team.

Whilst Liverpool can boast the best attacking line-up in the Premier League (Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge are a marvel), they still weren’t able to match Arsenal. The Gunners outplayed Liverpool and were deserved winners on the day.

This fact isn’t lost on Brendan Rodgers. Check out these quotes from the man himself:

“The Arsenal game was another indication that we need to keep improving our team in order to be able to compete. The focus is on bringing in players that can come straight in and improve our team. We did that last year and benefited from that.” (Source: The Mirror)

Unfortunately given the club’s spending in recent times, the Reds won’t have a big budget during the January transfer window. Brendan Rodgers is going to have to be smart.

The Mirror suggest that he’s considering striking a deal for Olympiakos centre-forward, Konstantinos Mitroglou. He’s currently valued at £6m. I can’t help but feel that this is exactly the kind of player that Liverpool should be chasing.

He’s an impressive forward, who’s powerful and pacey and knows how to find the back of the net (he’s in great form at the moment). He can provide proper cover for Daniel Sturridge and Luis Suarez and up levels of competition throughout the squad. Most importantly, he won’t break the bank.

He wouldn’t be a signing that would get Liverpool fans particularly worked up, but he would help to keep the club’s momentum levels up. In that sense, this is looking like a pretty smart deal. Brendan knows his bargains. Let’s hope this is another one.

What’s your take? Would you like to see Liverpool move in for Konstantinos Mitroglou?

Ta for the link, although let’s face it this is one of many transfer links we’ll get for the next 10 weeks.

    However, Harry, a few comments.

“Things have been going swimmingly but the cracks are already starting to show”.

Does two losses in 11 games (against the current 1st and 3rd in the table) honestly constitute impending “cracks” for Liverpool? Are these cracks any worse than Man. City struggling to win away, Spurs struggling to score or MU struggling to play football?

“The Gunners and the Reds have clambered up to the top of the Premier League table…”

“Clambered” is an odd verb, wouldn’t you say? They are, along with the Saints, the only teams to have taken 2 or more points per game with almost a third of the season gone.

“[A] 2-0 Liverpool defeat at the hands of Arsenal.. showed that the Gunners are currently far and away the better team.”

No, it simply showed that Arsenal were better on the day.
As were Villa against Arsenal, MU against Arsenal, Liverpool against MU, West Brom against MU and Chelsea… you see where i’m going with this.

Arsenal may well even be the better team. Yet they, like the others, still have to beat the lesser lights – something Liverpool are currently achieving handsomely.
