Could this Manchester United triple swoop breathe fresh life into the club?

Nicolas GaitanDesperate times call for drastic measures. I think it’s fair to say that Manchester United’s start to the season has been poor. If you were being kind, you might suggest that David Moyes is still settling in. One thing’s for sure. He needs to take control of the situation and quick.

The best way of doing that would be in the transfer window. Sir Alex Ferguson’s shadow still weighs heavy upon this team. Bringing in a few fresh bodies and making this team his ‘own’, would certainly be a step in the right direction.

As such, I was delighted to see that Manchester United are interested in not one, not two, but three Benfica players. We all want David Moyes to take action and it looks like he may well be ready to do exactly that. (Source: The Express)

The players in question are Nicolas Gaitan, Ezequiel Garay and Nemanja Matic. If they were to arrive at the same time, it would represent quite the statement of intent from Manchester United. It would prove that they still have the financial firepower to compete. It would also prove that they can still attract top talent.

Nicolas Gaitan is a very exciting player to watch indeed. The 25-year-old Argentine is known for his quick feet, smart footballing brain and his general all around effectiveness. Best of all, he always seems to chip in with a decent number of assists over the course of a season (a quality that more United midfielders need). Last year he registered 13 assists. The season before that he got 15. He’s pretty handy.

Matic, who was at Chelsea between 2009 and 2011 (and only made 2 appearances), is another crafty midfielder who would add some serious depth to this Manchester United squad. He’s currently the reigning Primeira Liga player of the year, so there’s something to be said for his ability.

Then there’s Ezequiel Garay a centre-back that the club have been interested in for some time. With Rio Ferdinand in the autumn of his career and Nemanja Vidic a constant injury doubt, signing a top defensive talent is certainly a good idea.

Gaitan has a price-tag of £25m. Ezequeil Garay could cost as much as £18m. There’s no word as to how much Matic would cost. But it’s clear enough the three of them won’t come cheap.

Given how much they’d improve this Manchester United squad however, their signings could prove very important indeed. Let’s hope Moyes has the steel to pull it off.

What’s your take? Should Manchester United complete this Benfica triple swoop?
