Could Manchester United be about to grab the bargain signing of the year?

Xabi AlonsoIt was weird (and somewhat depressing) to see Manchester United struggle to make their mark during the summer transfer window. For a club with such history, pedigree and financial power, it’s difficult to explain why David Moyes missed out on so many of his targets.

In the end the former Everton man lost out on players like Thiago Alcantara, Cesc Fabregas, Ander Herrera (and Cristiano Ronaldo, according to some sources). To make matters worse, he signed Marouane Fellaini, a player that Manchester United didn’t really need. It wasn’t a banner summer by any means.

There’s been a lot of debate as to why this was. Some have suggested that David Moyes simply doesn’t have the pull, or ‘attraction factor’ of Sir Alex Ferguson. Others have suggested that Manchester United are currently in a position where they need to start pinching the pennies.

Whether or not the Red Devils are still in a position where they can compete for top talent, there are some good players out there who can be bought on a budget.

I’m referring specifically to ex-Liverpool star, Xabi Alonso, a world-class midfielder who could be available on a free transfer in the near future.

Alonso is currently playing his football at the Bernabeu, where he’s still extremely highly-regarded. The Spaniard is one of the best passers in world football, boasts great vision and is technically superb.

For one reason or another, Alonso is reluctant to agree new terms at Real Madrid. It seems like he’s ready for a new challenge and I’m sure there’ll be plenty of interested parties moving in at this very moment. His current deal will expire this summer, but Real Madrid are willing to let him go this January if the right offer comes in.

Heck, The Star even claims that United are ‘leading the chase to sign Alonso’. They’ll face competition from Chelsea. This should be very exciting news for the Old Trafford faithful. He’s one of very few players in the world who is capable of lifting United out of their mini-slump.

Yes, he’s 31-years-old now, but he’s never exactly been a player who has relied upon his pace. I imagine that Alonso still has four-or-five good years left in him.

It’s not like United would have to shell out for him. He’s available on a free and he’s a player that the club needs. This strikes me as a no-brainer.

What’s your take? Should Manchester United dive in for Xabi Alonso?

Of course. Utd are scraping the barrel, looking at the benches at all big Clubs ! Frankly, I guess nobody who’s somebody wants to play for an unknown, ordinary and average manager aka David “dud” Moyes. Look, he can only buy player(s) from a club of his level ( Everton )..Sad days indeed for Utd and still waiting to hear from granddad why and how he hoodwinked the Glazers to appoint uncle Moyes. And yes, my opimion hasn’t changed even after Bayer L result last night. That was an exception, not the norm. West Brom, Liverfool, S’ton, Cardiff, Citeh results are the norm, under Moyes.

Another factor is the debt imposed on Man Utd by its current owner.
