Can Joe Allen still make it at Liverpool?

Joe AllenOne of the most disappointing aspects of Liverpool’s season last year (and it was a year where disappointment reigned supreme), was the failure of Joe Allen to adapt to his new surroundings.

He represented a major investment on the part of Brendan Rodgers, who brought him over from Swansea City. But whilst Rodgers was (eventually) able to make the step up, Allen struggled.

With the Swans, Allen was a seriously dynamic presence. His passing was quick, slick and accurate. Most importantly, it was effective. The Welshman linked up well with his forwards, was able to find the gaps in between defenders and deliver those killer balls.

But the Joe Allen that turned up at Anfield looked like a shadow of his former self. He looked nervous and out of place. His passing game was disrupted.

Rodgers stood by him and kept giving him opportunities until the Welshman picked up a long-term injury. After months out on the sidelines, Allen has made just four appearances so far this season. Only one of those was a start and it came against Notts County in the League Cup.

His Reds career has reached a complete standstill and there may be some who are wondering if there’s a way back for him. As it is, Allen has decided to keep the faith. Check out these quotes from the man himself:

“Martin is the perfect example for anyone who feels frustrated or impatient when they are not in the side. He’s done brilliantly and my idea is to do the same. Dealing with not being in the team can be tough, but it’s part and parcel of football.”

“There will be occasions when you are out of the side. If that’s the case, you have to do everything to put yourself forward for selection again. The more you get back out on the pitch, the more things will start to flow properly again. I can’t wait to get my chance.” (Source: The Star)

Skrtel is a good model for Allen to follow. If he’s to make his way back from his current situation, he’s going to have to work extremely hard. Most importantly, he’s going to have to get his belief back. The player he was at Swansea City was good enough to play for Liverpool. He just needs to believe that’s the case.

Restoring his confidence is up to both Brendan Rodgers and the fans. We have a job to do here. Let’s hope that Allen’s back to his best soon.

What’s your take? Does Joe Allen still have a chance at Anfield?
