Can Arsenal pluck this top striker away from their rivals?

Edin DzekoI was glad to see a recent story in The Mirror with the headline, ‘Arsenal ponder Edin Dzeko transfer from Manchester City to give Giroud a breather’.

After all, is there anybody in the Premier League more deserving of a break than good old Olly Giroud?

The Frenchman isn’t the most athletic individual and isn’t exactly a bundle of energy. But he sure has worked hard this season.

He fights for each and every ball, be it along the ground, or in the air. He spends a lot of time trying to out-muscle defenders, making smart runs and trying to connect with the midfield.

At the end of each game he looks justifiably knackered. It’s a good job that there’s been some end product to all these exertions. If there hadn’t been, the Gunners really would have been stuck this season.

Unfortunately, beyond Giroud, Arsene Wenger has nobody else to turn to. Yes, Nicklas Bendtner is still milling around, but given his lackluster performances this year, he’s not one to pin any hopes on.

But, there’s no way that Giroud can play two 90 minute games each week for the rest of the year and not start to produce diminishing returns. The man needs a breather. In other words, he needs a proper world-class striking partner.

As suggested by The Mirror, Edin Dzeko could be that man. With Alvaro Negredo and Sergio Aguero pulling the strings at Eastlands, the Bosnian & Herzegovina international has cut a frustrated figure this season.

By now Dzeko will be well aware that he’ll never hold down a regular starting role at Manchester City. That may not be the case, however, were he to move to Arsenal.

A move to the Emirates may also be appealing to Dzeko thanks to the Gunners current title-contender status. Whilst City keep chucking away points, Arsenal have been nothing but consistent this season.

With another striker in tow, the club is only going to improve. With a striker of Dzeko’s quality leading the line, things could get very good indeed.

We all know what Dzeko is capable of. He’s a fine finisher, who’s more mobile than Giroud and works hard for the team. Given the positions he takes up, I’m sure the likes of Mesut Ozil, Santi Cazorla and Aaron Ramsey will relish playing alongside him.

What’s your take? Could Arsenal make a deal for Edin Dzeko happen? Will Manchester City play hardball?

I don’t know which is more hysterical, the “Title-contender status’ line or that you’ve referred to Dzeko as ‘quality’ If you watch Dzeko for the whole time he’s on the pitch rather than the 3 second clip from MoTD then you’d know he’s lazy, greedy, thinks he can dribble passed everyone and score from every angle on the pitch, needs 5 or 6 touches to control the ball, and seems to think doing one ‘decent’ thing in a match then his job is done for the afternoon. I remember Arsenal fans howling with laughter when City bought Adebayor and said they’d live to regret it, well…. this is the exact same thing!! As for the ‘title-contender status’….. well Swansea City have more chance of winning the Ryder Cup than Arsenal have of winning the Premier League
