Could Spurs really be about to pull off this stupendous signing?

Andrea PirloWouldn’t it be something if we finally got to see Andrea Pirlo strut his stuff in the Premier League?

As one of the most gifted footballers of his generation, he’d fit in nicely in English football. I know there’d be a whole host of fans who’d welcome the move, regardless of their club allegiance.

The move would be even more surprising if he were to end up at Tottenham.

Whilst Spurs have come on leaps and bounds in recent years, they still don’t strike me as the kind of club who can attract top players like Andrea Pirlo.

I’m sure this is down to my own pre-conceptions, but I can’t help but feel like Pirlo would favour a move to a big club like Manchester United (who happen to be after a creative midfielder), or somebody like Chelsea, who could afford to offer him substantial wages.

As it happens, both Manchester United and Chelsea are after him, along with Arsenal (who seem to traffic in slick passers). According to The Star, however, it’s Tottenham who are leading the charge.

Andrea Pirlo’s Juventus contract will expire in the summer when he’ll be available on a free transfer. By this stage there is sure to be a long list of eligible suitors looking to snap him up.

It’s claimed that Spurs have looked to jump to the head of the queue by offering the Italian international a three year deal. The hope is that an agreement will be in place by January.

There seems to be some evidence for these claims. Former Chelsea boss Gianluca Vialli has been keeping his ear to the ground and recently spoke about the link: “I’ve heard rumours from England that there has been contact between Pirlo and Tottenham for next season.”

If this is true, it’s very exciting news indeed. It would cement Tottenham’s position as a club who can attract the cream of the European crop. It would prove that they’re not a selling club.

More importantly, it would make Spurs an even slicker, more attractive passing side. It could help Andre Villas-Boas lead his side to silverware over the next few years. Given that he’d be a free transfer, this is beginning to look like a win-win.

With that in mind, I’ll be keeping my fingers crossed.

What’s your take? Could Spurs really wrap up a deal for Andrea Pirlo?

We just sold the young English version of Pirlo. Why would we want the old Italian version/

  • Wattsy says:

Why would it prove we are not a selling club???

  • hmm says:

    “big club”

  • Stu says:

This feels like agent talk designed to get Pirlo one last bumper contract at Juve

  • Jag says:

Who is the english young pirlo? Please don’t tell me you are talking about Tom Hudds lol

  • spurman says:

Well he wont have to tear around in his old age at Spurs at the moment.

  • ColinSC says:

Do we really need a midfielder with a walking frame?

Tottenham not big enough to sign an aging superstar?? Give me a break!
Klinnsman was near enough at his peak when he came to Spurs the 1st time ..because of clever negotiation. Ardiles was a star and World Cup winner when he came to Spurs, not to mention all the top British talent that wanted to come to us throughout the decades.
Besides them, we’ve had countless stars join us when they’ve been slightly over the hill ..look at Edgar Davids for instance ..or good youngsters before they became stars.
Pirlo is 36, not 27, and is hardly at the peak of his powers! Many fine players around the world look to Spurs as a club on the up again and, given the right circumstances great players at their peak (or just over it) would join us, just as rising young stars would.
Pirlo too good for Spurs? Hardly ..it’s more like the other way around these days.
Why don’t we sign Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes as well?
Having said that, it would be interesting to see Pirlo or Ryan/Scholesie (for that matter) come in on a free and play a season for us ..in selected games. These guys can still bring something to the club, influence the younger players, and of course they ARE winners!

well we don’t need him…atm both holtby & eriksen are avg so im guessing avb wil give siggy a start in dat no10 role in 2da game… chadli left & lamela right….capoe &dembele

  • Sid says:

What a load of old rubbish, why would Spurs sign someone that can only play 20 minutes at the most a week, let him go to a ‘Bigger’ club like Chelsea who can afford the 75, 000 grand a week for a bench warmer.

  • Gobbalot says:

Each year since 2004-2005 season Spurs has been ranked 11-15 in the world in the Deloitte table of richest clubs. How that is not a “big club” is beyond belief and smacks of ignorance on behalf of Harry Cloke. Is it the biggest club? No. Of course not. But it is a very big club.

  • Ro says:

Another hopeful for championship next season. love to see him on the side though.

  • Fletch says:

The bloke is in his mid 30’s FFS. Levy won’t touch him and we wouldn’t want him – his wages alone (even if we aren’t paying a transfer fee) would be a joke

Harry, whomever you are,we almost bit.Anyone would think this author isn’t aware of pirlo’s age! Pirlo is wonderful when he has time to spray passes around, which the PL does not allow. Unfortunately he is a little bit too old to play ninety minutes in this league. As sid says let him go to chelsea or a “passed” it man u for his last big pay day.

  • George says:

    It would prove that they’re not a selling club. I don’t think so….Hoddle, Waddle, Gazza, Lineker,Gough,Allen. Ginola,Klinsmann, Sheringham. Modric,Carrick,Bale, Berbatov,V Der Vaart…………………..

    • George#TwO says:

well done george-you can make a list of players that spurs have sold over the last 25+ years. bear in mind that they have had 4 different chairmen since then and for whatever reason players have been sold. what a load of cods wallop mate

  • Brad says:

I agree in a sense to this sloppy writing… 8/9 years ago, when he was… 27/28!! I’d say for sure, he’s never joining spurs. Now however I’d bet he’d jump at the chance! There’s no way we will pay anything for him so if it’s not a straight free signing Daniel will tell um to bog off. Great player, more under the hill than over it and highly likely to get injured in his first few games in the prem never to play again.

  • Rich says:

no, due to the fact that the transfer window isnt open
