Would this £50m transfer blowout save Manchester United’s season?

|

David MoyesaIt’s not a fun time to be a Manchester United fan. The Red Devils have had it their way for so long, that undergoing such a drastic change in fortunes must be hard to take.

Losing Sir Alex Ferguson was always going to leave its mark. But having somebody as capable and experienced as David Moyes step up to the plate should have made the transition easy… shouldn’t it?

That hasn’t exactly proven to be the case. The former Everton man has struggled in his new role and seems to be in charge of an aging side that are devoid of both confidence and creativity. It’s a tough position to be in.

The 2-1 home defeat to West Brom made Manchester United the subject of much mockery. A 1-1 draw with Shakhtar Donetsk will have done little to help. Whilst Arsenal were effortlessly shoving aside a well-drilled Napoli side, Manchester United were flopping once again.

What’s going on?

Whatever the answer, it’s clear that Manchester United need to invest in their squad. David Moyes also needs to show the strength he lacked throughout the summer, when the transfer window re-opens. It’s imperative that United don’t undergo another Cesc Fabregas/Thiago Alcantara situation, where they invest so much time into a no-goer.

It’s got so bad that The Mirror suggest that David Moyes will spend £50m this January in order to ‘save Manchester United’s season’. Goodness me.

The players they list as potential targets are Athletic Bilbao midfielder, Ander Herrera, Everton left-back, Leighton Baines and Porto defender Eliquim  Mangala.

All three players would be excellent additions who would significantly improve this Manchester United side.

Herrera would provide the unpredicability, craft and ingenuity that’s lacking in United’s midfield. By working alongside Shinji Kagawa, Manchester United could make their midfield into a real force again.

Leighton Baines would be a great replacement for Patrice Evra, who isn’t getting any younger. Then there’s Eliaquim Mangala, who could end up being the most expensive of the three (he has a £37.8m buy-out clause written into his contract).

Given that Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic both seem to be on their last legs, it makes sense to bring in a talented youngster (Mangala is just 22-years-old). He’s an exciting young prospect and I’d love to see him in a Manchester United shirt.

These kind of signings might well put the Red Devils in a position to compete again this season. If David Moyes sits still, however and lets the club stagnate, United could be in deep trouble.

What’s your take? Would you like to see Ander Herrera, Leighton Baines or Eliaquim Mangala move to Old Trafford this January?
