Could Arsenal really pull off this £34m super signing?

Marco ReusArsene Wenger has always had confidence in his squad, but for the first time in about eight years, that confidence seems to be well merited.

He’s currently in charge of an Arsenal side that are buzzing with energy and belief. The Gunners are playing with an organised ruthlessness that has cut apart each and every team placed in front of them this season (barring Aston Villa).

With Mathieu Flamini finally providing the Gunners back-four with the protection they need, Per Mertesacker proving to be a tough nut to crack and Aaron Ramsey establishing himself as the Premier League’s best midfielder, Arsenal look very impressive indeed. The fact that we haven’t even touched on the Gunners’ £42.5m signing, Mesut Ozil, is telling.

What’s more, the Gunners are finally in a position where they’re not selling their best player every summer. Moreover, they’re in a position where they don’t really need to make further signings (although another top class striker would be a smart purchase).

Instead, Wenger can just target special, world-class players who would improve any squad. That’s what he did with Mesut Ozil in the summer. Despite having an already impressive midfield, Wenger went out and brought in somebody even better than his current options.

This brings me to the rumours concerning Arsenal and Borussia Dortmund forward, Marco Reus.

Given Arsenal’s strength down the flanks, signing Reus isn’t exactly essential. But he would improve the squad immensely and elevate the club even further. The fact that he managed to score 19 goals from down the flanks last season is very impressive indeed.

Needless to say, Dortmund wont want to let go of him. According to their CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke, the club is keen to maintain  a good relationship with Reus:

“Marco feels very comfortable at Dortmund and we feel comfortable with him.  He has an even closer relationship with the club and the city than Mario Gotze did and I expect him to stay.

“Marco was born here, his family live here and his whole life has always been based here. He knows that BVB is the perfect place for him. I am sure of that.”

That’s all well and good, but the promise of more money and a move to the Premier League could be tempting to an ambitious young star like Marco Reus. The Star suggest that it could cost as much as £34m to make a deal happen.

Arsenal have already proven that they’re capable of doing deals like this. Let’s see if Arsene Wenger can pull it off again.

What’s your take? Should Arsenal move in for Marco Reus?

  • James says:

If we pulls this off its would be fantastic this guy is on the same level as someone Such as Eden Hazard. But I don’t think he would move in Jan because of the champions league… He would be cup tied and Dormund would still be in the campions league come Jan unless something bad happens. This move is more lickly to happen in the summer

  • Ash says:

I hv seen him play a lot dis guy is way better than hazard he is very close to ronaldo…Reus single handedly destroyed Real Madrid cl last year

  • VGod says:

Comparing Reus and Eden Hazard is an insult to Reus, he’s way above Hazard

  • VGod says:

Marko Reus of Dortmud, Lars Bender of Bayern Leverkusen and Jackson Martinez of fc Porto are three player that can add more quality and depth to the current arsenal squad, Reus an attackin mid-fielder that plays in different positions & scores a lot of goals, Bender a defensive mid-fielder that plays right & center back very well, Jackson a striker that plays center forward, left and right wing very well, all three player are good dribbler of the ball with very good pace & they are just 24years old expect jackson who is 27, for a striker that is a good age.
