Fabio CoentraoWhilst he has been the subject a lot of unfair criticism, it does seem as though David Moyes is doing his damnedest to work his way into Manchester United fan’s bad books. To say that he’s started his tenure as Manchester United boss slowly, would be an understatement. Three losses in six games is completely unacceptable.

It’s easy to point the finger of blame and suggest that this kind of thing wouldn’t happen under Sir Alex Ferguson’s watch. But there are some clear weaknesses in this Manchester United team, which doesn’t have the strength in depth of teams of yesteryear.

Of course, David Moyes must share some of the blame for this. He had plenty of time to bring in players this summer and seemed completely incapable of doing so. It was clear that he was after a creative midfielder, but failed to secure a deal for Thiago Alcantara (who preferred to buddy-up with his former Barcelona manager, Pep Guardiola, at Bayern Munich), Cesc Fabregas (who still wants to prove himself at Barcelona) and Ander Herrera (who sparked the whole ‘impostor saga’).

In the end, he signed Marouane Fellaini, a player I’m not sure that Manchester United needed.

David Moyes also attempted and failed to sign Real Madrid full-back, Fabio Coentrao on deadline day. Unfortunately, Madrid weren’t able to find a replacement at such short notice, and turned down United’s advances.

But with the aging Patrice Evra remaining United’s only real option at left-back, I’m sure bringing somebody in will be a priority this January. I’m just not sure Alexander Buttner has what it takes to make it at the top level of the Premier League.

After this all went down, Fabio Coentrao spoke about his potential move: “There was the possibility of joining Manchester United, but I stayed at Real Madrid, and that’s what matters. It would have been bad if I had to stay despite having the chance to move to a better club, but that didn’t happen as I already am at the best club in the world.” (Source: The Star)

He seems pretty keen to make it at Real Madrid, but I’m sure Carlo Ancelotti would be willing to let him go should the right offer come in. Despite his talent, he’s not indispensable and should Manchester United swoop in, a move could go through.

This would be a good addition for a struggling Manchester United side. His pace, technique and crossing ability would be a real asset for the club. So, let’s see if David Moyes can get his man this time round.

What’s your take? Should Manchester United move back in for Fabio Coentrao?
