Should Tottenham move in again for this ex-player?

Clint DempseyTottenham’s 2-0 victory over Aston Villa wasn’t particularly impressive, but it did provide further evidence that this team is capable of grinding out results when necessary.

Last season, Spurs could usually rely on Gareth Bale to produce the goods at the very last moment and secure them some points. This year, Tottenham have had to rely on good team work, neat build up play and some stand-out performances from folk like Paulinho and Andros Townsend.

Paul Lambert’s Villa side made it difficult for Tottenham, but it wasn’t enough. There’s an aura of belief about this Spurs side. There’s a reason why people are starting to wonder if Andre Villas-Boas could lead this side to the Premier League title.

That may seem like an outrageous goal. But given the strength in depth of this squad and the fact that Tottenham aren’t competing in the Champions League, it’s not impossible.

This is especially true if Villas-Boas decides to make further recruits during the January transfer window.

This brings me to The Mirror‘s claim that Clint Dempsey could be on his way back to the Premier League when the transfer window re-opens. Fulham, Everton and yes, Tottenham are all said to be ‘keen’.

But given the high-quality players that were brought in during the summer, it would feel like a step in the wrong direction to re-sign Clint Dempsey. Let’s not forget, he’s now 30-years-old.

Whilst a goal-scoring midfielder always comes in handy, Spurs already have plenty of these. I’d say it’s time to put faith in players like Paulinho, Moussa Dembele and Christian Eriksen.

I’m just not sure that Clint Dempsey will get the kind of game time he’d like at White Hart Lane. Yes, he’d be playing for a ream who could well win silverware this year, but it wouldn’t be the best long-term option for his career.

I’m sure he wouldn’t cost too much money, but given how much Spurs spent last summer, I’d say it’s time to tighten the purse strings and to stop making ‘luxury’ signings.

Tottenham desperately need to sign another striker to provide more support for Roberto Soldado. With Jermain Defoe not getting younger and Emmanuel Adebayor doing his best to alienate each and every fan, it’s time to bring in somebody else.

With that in mind, let’s hope that Clint Dempsey isn’t on his way back to the club.

What’s your take? Would you have Clint Dempsey back at White Hart Lane?

Strange story. If you saw him last year, there is only one answer. He is not a Spurs player. Don’t forget how bad we were last season, playing with 7 contributing players in most games. Walker, Adebayor, Parker and Dempsey.. and Friedel who wouldnt come off his line! When you rememember that you realise we will finish top 4.
