Should Arsenal spend £25m or play the long-game to secure this Bundesliga sensation?

Robert LewandowskiIt would be easy enough to question how Borussia Dortmund ever let Robert Lewandowski’s contract run-down. After all, the man is one of the deadliest strikers in world football. He’s absolutely invaluable to the Bundesliga side.

But Arsenal fans will know all too well how easy it is to let a player slip from their grip. Such was the case with Robin Van Persie, who used his contract situation to secure a move to Manchester United.

When a player wants to leave, it’s often the case that their club can do very little to stop them.

Borussia Dortmund are now resigned to the fact that Robert Lewandowski will leave them at the end of the season (when his contract runs out). But there’s also a chance that he could leave this January, should somebody move in with a decent offer.

This brings me to The Mirror’s claim that both Manchester City and Arsenal are on the hunt for the Polish striker, following the news that his proposed move to Bayern Munich is far from a ‘done deal’.

Wouldn’t it be something if Arsenal were to acquire a contract rebel, rather than lose one? That would be a pretty neat turn around — one befitting of the club’s current change in fortunes.

Manchester City already have a number of strikers. Manuel Pellegrini can choose between Sergio Aguero (one of the best strikers in world football), Edin Dzeko (a fine finisher), Alvaro Negredo and Stevan Jovetic. It would be unfair of City to sign another striker and send any of these players further down the pecking order.

Arsenal, on the other hand, have a fairly desperate need to sign another striker. Olivier Giroud has done a fine job leading the line this season, but he needs more support. Beyond the Frenchman, Arsenal don’t really have any other viable options.

That’s why it’s exciting to see The Mirror suggest that Arsenal are prepared to spend £25m to bring Robert Lewandowski to the Emirates this January.

That’s a lot of money to spend on a player who would be available on a free just six months later. But this doesn’t change the fact that he’s the best striker on the market at the moment. Signing him this January would allow Arsenal to avoid any potential competition for him during the summer.

It would be a smart move from a manager who has shown that he’s now willing to put his money where his mouth is. Now let’s see if Wenger can get his man.

What’s your take? Should Arsenal spend big on Robert Lewandowski?
