Will HughesOver the last few years, we’ve all seen a thousand ‘think pieces’ about how the transfer market is a mess. The pundits, people in the know and arm-chair warriors won’t stop banging on about how football has gone money crazy.

I’m not here to disagree with this thesis. It’s been extremely frustrating watching the likes of Chelsea and Manchester City throwing their weight around and bringing in players who wouldn’t have been interested were it not for the huge paycheck they’d be pocketing each week.

But it’s not like there are no bargains out there to be had. Just look at the signings of Michu and Christian Benteke for instance. They are two of the Premier League’s most fearsome strikers and their collective price-tags amount to no more than £10m.

What’s more, it’s still satisfying to see a club use its smarts in the transfer window and attract players that they otherwise wouldn’t.

Just look at how Arsene Wenger played the market in order to sign Mesut Ozil. He waited and waited until Gareth Bale was signed and then moved in at the opportune time.

Now it’s Brendan Rodgers turn to prove he’s worth his salt. According to The Mirror, Rodgers has put Liverpool in prime position to sign Derby County sensation, Will Hughes.

It’s believed that Liverpool have loaned defender Andre Wisdom to Steve McClaren’s derby side, as a ‘sweetener’, to help encourage  the sale of Hughes during the January transfer window.

Wisdom will remain with the Rams until the end of the season. By this stage, Will Hughes may already be on his way out of the club.

Despite only being 18-years-old, Hughes is a very exciting talent indeed. He models his game on the likes of Andres Iniesta and Xaxi, has an excellent range of passes and technical ability to burn.

He’s not your typical, tough-tackling English youngster. There’s something special about this lad and he certainly won’t look out of place with a Liverpool shirt on.

It’s thought that he could cost the Reds as much as £15m. That’s a lot of money, but it may represent a smart investment.

Hughes is only going to get better and better over the next couple of years. As a result, his price-tag will rise and rise. If Brendan Rodgers is interested, then there’s no point holding back.

The loaning of Andre Wisdom has put the Reds in a strong position. Now let’s see if Rodgers is capable of capitalising on it.

What’s your take? Could Liverpool use another gifted youngster about their ranks?
