La Liga ace ‘open to’ Arsenal move: Should Wenger make it happen?

Alex SongAlex Song has had a truly odd career. He went from a hapless, unorganised, ill-disciplined midfielder, to somebody who combined tough tackling with some attacking flair during his time at Arsenal.

Whilst he never really managed to curb his attacking instincts, he did play a key role for the Gunners in his last year at the club. This is particularly true in the way that he was able to link-up with Robin Van Persie (I’m sure you’ll recall Alex Song’s assist and RVP’s goal against Everton).

But very few would have been able to foresee Barcelona swooping in and snapping him up. Whilst the La Liga side do always tend to keep a watchful eye on Arsenal talent, this did seem to be an odd match.

In a way it made sense. Alex Song is one of the most attacking defensive midfielders in world football and Barcelona have a distinct attacking philosophy. But given that they already had Javier Mascherano and Sergio Busquets on the books, the move just didn’t seem to make sense.

Unsurprisingly, Alex Song hasn’t had much of a look in at the Nou Camp. In fact, he’s only received three starts this season, though the papers are claiming his form is improving. His 100% pass completion rate is certainly impressive.

With little chance of Song clambering over Busquets in the pecking order, I wouldn’t be surprised if he moved on during the January transfer window.

Manchester United are thought to be interested, but having just bought Marouane Fellaini, will perhaps steer clear. The Red Devils desperately need to add more creativity to their squad instead.

And now The Star claim that Alex Song is ‘open to’ a move back to his old club, Arsenal. If he were to return, he’d have to eat a fair amount of humble pie. His move to Spain would officially be a flop.

But could he do a job for Arsenal? Perhaps.

Yes Arsene Wenger just signed Mathieu Flamini, but the former AC Milan star is no spring-chicken. Defending has always been a weakness of this Arsenal squad and adding another body to this area of the pitch can’t hurt. Especially if that individual already knows the intricacies and internal workings of the club.

In the end, it all comes down to price. If Barca are willing to take a loss on the player (they spent £15m on him), then he may be worth a shot. If not, Arsenal should steer clear.

What’s your take? Should the Gunners give Alex Song another chance?
