Do Manchester United really need ‘three top class’ players to compete?

|

David Moyes discovered just how easy life can be at Old Trafford last weekend

As things currently stand, Manchester United currently sit in ninth place in the Premier League table. For a team so accustomed to winning silverware and leading the League, it’s a rather odd position for the club to be in. It all seems to have gone a little topsy-turvy.

The natural reaction, of course, and the one that most fans have taken up, is to fall into instant despair. To start scapegoating players, singling out individuals for criticism and to start slating the management of the club. That’s what it is to be a Manchester United fan at the moment.

Luckily enough, there are a few bright sparks. Some players have performed well thus far this season and will improve with additional game time. David Moyes, on the other hand, has started slowly, but will surely improve as the season progresses.

Of course, there’s a lot of work to be done. In particular, the January transfer window is likely to be a very important time for the club.

Which brings me to Ruud Gullit’s recent quotes about what Manchester United need to do if they’re to retain the Championship this year.

The ex-Chelsea boss said: “I can fully understand that new boss David Moyes has now asked the board to sanction the purchase of three top class footballers in the winter to keep the team competing at the highest level in England and Europe.

“I have reason to believe that funds are being made available at United. And they should because it is a necessity. And when they do buy those three stars, it will be easier to let Wayne Rooney follow his heart if he wants to leave. They kept basically the same team and squad in the summer. Which is why they are inconsistent in the Premier League.” (Source: The Mirror)

It’s good to hear that David Moyes will be granted funds this January (even if it comes from a fairly unreliable source in Ruud Gullit). More interesting still, is the thought that Manchester United need ‘three top class footballers’ to help them compete this season.

That’s a big statement, but I can’t help but note the truth of it. United are a far cry away from a team capable of competing for silverware.

They need to either go the Arsenal route and splash the cash on a world beater (£42.4m on Mesut Ozil), or the Tottenham route and bring in numerous decent signings. The club has the money to pull off either option.

Either way, it’s clear that drastic action is needed. Let’s hope that David Moyes is ready to heed Ruud Gullit’s advice.

What’s your take? What do Manchester United need to be competitive once more?
