Should Arsenal heed Robert Pires’ advice?

Robert PiresThings are going well at the moment for Arsenal. There’s little doubt of that. The Gunners sit aloft at the top of the Premier League table and are positively brimming with confidence.

The signing of Mesut Ozil has had a massive effect on the club. The fact that Arsenal even went after him is something of an Arsene Wenger masterstroke. Nobody really believed that Arsenal needed yet another creative midfielder, but his addition to the squad seems to have transformed the North London side into title contenders.

Whilst Ozil is still settling into the Premier League and will take some time to adapt to its pace and physicality, he has already managed to make his mark on numerous occasions. His quick passing, clever footballing brain and composure on the ball will serve Arsenal well this season, there’s little doubt about that.

It’s amazing the effect that one signing can have on a club. Just imagine the effect if Arsenal were to pull off another big signing.

This brings me to Arsenal legend, Robert Pires’ recent comments about what the Gunners need to do in order to secure long-term success:

“If you look at all the successful clubs who won titles and trophies, they always buy after they have been successful. There is no question that Arsenal are at a high level at this moment. They are playing to the kind of football played during my time at the club. And Ozil – well, he is world-class.

But their appears to be a new financial philosophy at Arsenal now. Arsene can spend money, more than he has been able to do before and I believe he should add to the squad when he can.” (Source: The Mirror)

It’s interesting to hear Bobby suggest that Arsenal are playing football that wouldn’t have looked out of place during his tenure at the club. It’s interesting, because that era was a showcase for some of the best football ever played by an Arsenal side, with players like Pires, Thierry Henry and Dennis Bergkamp truly excelling.

His suggestion that Arsene ‘should add tot he squad when he can’, is also spot on. Arsenal are riding high at the moment, but if they’re to keep up this momentum, they’ll need to make further additions to their squad.

Not every signing needs to be a world-beater like Mesut Ozil. But if Arsene continues to bring in top-class talent that genuinely improves the squad, then Arsenal will get better and more competitive.

That sounds like a step in the right direction to me.

What’s your take? Should Arsenal keep spending or does the club have all the options it needs?
