Can Arsenal really afford to compete for this £43m talent?

Karim BenzemaArsene Wenger learnt this summer that quality doesn’t come cheap (not anymore, any way). He has been reaping the benefits ever since.

Prior to this summer, Arsene was known as a tight-fisted manager, one who didn’t spend unless absolutely necessary. Then, during the last transfer window, he spent £42.4m on a creative midfielder, an already crowded area of Arsenal’s squad.

It was a bizarre move, but it has paid off and then some. Arsenal aren’t just competing again, they’re currently topping the Premier League table. They are with out a doubt, the League’s in form team. A lot of this is due to the club’s new addition, Mesut Ozil.

But there’s still one area of the club that’s lacking. Arsenal don’t have enough strikers and this could well scupper their chances of winning silverware this year and in the future, unless something is done.

Whilst I recognise that Olivier Giroud has improved inordinately over the last 12 months, he’s only one man. If he were to get injured, the Gunners would seriously miss his smart flicks, build up play and composure in front of goal. But that’s because Arsenal have nobody else to turn to if he were unavailable.

Nicklas Bendtner doesn’t deserve to play for a top team like Arsenal. Yaya Sanogo isn’t ready. Somebody needs to be brought into take the pressure off of Giroud.

And I hope Wenger’s learned from Mesut Ozil, that he shouldn’t go for the cheap option.

This brings me to The Metro’s claim that Arsenal could be about to splash out £43m on Karim Benzema during the January transfer window. It’s suggested that the source for this move is recognised FIFA agent, Francois Gallardo.

That’s an obscene amount of money. Given the cash that has just been spent on Mesut Ozil, I’m not sure Arsenal can afford to move for Karim Benzema. But I hope that Arsene Wenger gives it a go. He’ll be the best possible striker available this January.

Given his technical ability, his French nationality and his goal-scoring nous, he’ll also be a good fit for the Arsenal team. He’d certainly thrive on service from the likes of Santi Cazorla, Jack Wilshere and yes, his old team-mate, Ozil.

If Arsenal do bring in a striker with this much talent and ability, they could well end up with the best squad in the Premier League.

What’s your take? Should Arsenal spend £43m on Karim Benzema?

Benzema is not worth 43 mill period. Over-rated, its just his release clause that states that.
