Are Tottenham still a ‘stepping stone’ club?

|

andre villas-boasIt’s been interesting to watch Tottenham deal with all the furore that Vlad Chiriches has created. The Romanian defender has forced the club to puff out its chest in an attempt to prove their credentials. Previously this kind of behaviour is the kind of thing that opposition fans would have laughed at. But not any more.

For once, this kind of behaviour is becoming of a Tottenham side. It seems that they have finally joined the big boys.

It all begun earlier in the week, when Chiriches’ agent suggested that his player wanted to move to Chelsea and play under Jose Mourinho. In that sense, his move to White Hart Lane was something of a stepping stone.

Andre Villas-Boas bit back against these comments and he bit back hard:

“Obviously the comments are completely disproportionate and out of reality,” said Spurs boss Villas-Boas. I have spoken to the player, told the player to speak to the agent and we have acted accordingly. We consider ourselves a big club. We’re not a stepping stone to anybody.

We don’t expect Becali to retract himself because it is not part of his character, but it was completely out of proportion the comments that he made.” (Source: The Mirror)

That’s absolutely right. Tottenham are a big club. The Premier League table doesn’t lie. They are right up there with Chelsea and deserve to be too.

The club’s outraged reaction is completely justified. It may not have been in the past, when Spurs were a stepping stone to greater things, but that’s just not the case any more. The club deserves more respect from players, fans and pundits alike.

What’s interesting about this whole debacle, is that we’re seeing how fan feeling is already beginning to change. Previously, it would have been Tottenham who were laughed at, now it’s the player (or should I say, his agent?) who is being held up as a prime example of all that’s wrong in the footballing world.

He’s barely got his foot in the door at White Hart Lane and he’s already planning to move on? Phooey!

Vlad Chiriches is being paid to work hard and produce results on the pitch for Tottenham. Not for anybody else. At this stage in his career, he really shouldn’t be thinking about anything else. It strikes me that Vlad needs to wake up and realise that he isn’t Gareth Bale.

I’m all for long-term career planning, but this just about takes the biscuit. I only hope that Chiriches gets his head down, trains hard and wins his way back into Spurs fans’ good books. But even then, the question will remain: is he trying to earn a move to Stamford Bridge?

It’s quite something for a player to have ruined his reputation so soon after a move.

What’s your take? Was Vlad Chiriches’ agent within his rights to make those comments?

“It’s quite something for a player to have ruined his reputation so soon after a move” .Perhaps you might provide a reference to where the player said ANYTHING about his future. It was the agent and it is poor journalism or total dishonesty to atrtibute a comment to the player to hang a story on. If you don’t provide the reference, no doubt you will compose an article and post it on the internet, appoligising for defaming the player. Shameful lack of decency and respect.
