With the transfer window about to slam shut, Arsenal fans are still clamouring for new additions to their injury-stricken squad.
There are still concerns as to what the Gunners are capable of this season. After years of disappointment, fans remain desperate to challenge for silverware this year. With the squad as it currently is, however, this doesn’t look possible.
The Gunners just don’t have enough strength in depth, or enough talent on the bench to play the Premier League long-game. The performance at Aston Villa was evidence enough that this Arsenal side doesn’t have enough about it to challenge for the title this season. What’s more, the Gunners always seem to bottle it in the Cup competitions.
It doesn’t look good for the Gunners. Further additions are desperately needed.
This rumour, courtesy of The Express will probably do little to pacify fans clamouring for marquee signings. But I’d argue it would be a smart move on the part of Arsene Wenger, especially if it’s followed up with a few more astute additions.
According to reports in Italy, Arsenal have been in touch with Juventus, regarding a bid for Italian forward, Fabio Quagliarella. Yes, that’s the same Quagliarella that Norwich lodged an £8.5m bid for earlier this summer (a bid that was turned down) and who West Ham are currently attempting to tie down.
Fans may not want to see their club competing with the Canaries and the Hammers for transfer targets, but Quagliarella is a good player.
He’s played for a host of Serie A’s top clubs, including Sampdoria, Udinese and Napoli. He’s spent the last three years building his reputation at Juve. He’s renowned for his grace on the ball and his shooting technique. He’s also confident in front of goal. In 79 appearances for the Old Lady, he’s scored 26 goals. Indeed, if you take out the 2011/12 season (where he only scored 4 in 27) he tends to a goal or so every two games. That’s not a bad return at all.
Still, he’s not exactly a nailed on starter at Juventus. With new arrivals Carlos Tevez and Fernando Llorente pushing him further down the pecking order, I wouldn’t be surprised if he angled for a move before the transfer window closes.
Arsenal have money to burn and need to bolster their forward ranks. Quagliarella would be a good addition to the squad and would provide another option throughout a long, long season.
