Would Arsenal fans be happy with this £40m panic-buy?

Julian DraxlerArsene Wenger has spent most of the summer explaining why he hasn’t spent any money, ‘yet’. A lot of the focus has been placed on an unwillingness to panic buy. Just check out this choice quote from a recent interview:

“We will not panic buy, that is for sure. It is not my strength to panic.” (Source: The BBC)

What happened in the summer of 2011 then, eh, Arsene?

I hate to talk ill of a man who has done more to further football than just about any other practising footballing manager, but in the same interview he even suggests that Nicklas Bendtner will be given opportunities this season. He is driving Arsenal fans to the brink.

With all the guarding against panic buys, it’s a little worrying to see The Mirror describe the following transfer rumour as a ‘desperate last-ditch move’. They claim that Arsenal are working hard to agree a deal for German wonderkid Julian Draxler before the window slams shut.

Draxler has been a long-term transfer target for the Gunners, but it doesn’t look like this will be an east deal to close. It’s thought that Arsenal are willing to offer Schalke £40m, whilst the Bundesliga side are demanding £60m.

That’s an absolutely staggering amount of money. But at just 19-years-old, Draxler’s credentials are great. He’s the second youngest player to ever start a Bundesliga game (behind Nuri Sahin) and has already established himself as a key cog in the Schalke machine.

The young German talent is known for his expert ability to read the game, his technical mastery and dribbling ability. He’s the kind of player who loves to take players on, drive into dangerous positions and create havoc.

He’s also got a fierce shot and chipped in with 13 goals from the midfield last season. Let’s not forget that he’s only 19-years-old.

Still, £60m is a lot of money for a teenager, especially when Mario Gotze left Borussia Dortmund for 37m euros earlier this summer (admittedly a release clause was triggered in this case).

For this deal to make sense for Arsenal, they have to try and drive the price down some how. Imagine the pressure on the youngster’s shoulders if he knew the Gunners had spent that much on him.

This is a deal that I’d love to see go through, but if the Gunners can’t do it on their terms, they should turn away. Arsene Wenger wouldn’t want to be accused of panic-buying, after all.

What’s your take? Should Arsenal look to seal a deadline deal for Julian Draxler?

Have you been following the Ozil news?

  • LouGooner says:

what has this year got to do with 2011?

  • Mike says:

So just because Ozil wasn’t one of the hundreds of players the media GUESSED we were linked with, it’s now a “panic buy!

You are utterly shameless. You’re whole job is based on speculation and when you get it wrong you have become offensive in order to cover up your own inadequacies. In any other profession you’d be sacked for such ineptitude.

I’m with you Bro. These so-called chair reporters are useless! Panic buys? Never. Wenger always has the guy in his mind ,but it does not always work out. This deal with Ozil may have been on the burner for a while ,and now that bale head is gone to live his dream in Spain and away from spud land, things are opening doors. So screw all you who have doubted Wenger and Arsenal’s intentions….Go on GOONERS!!!

  • Petter says:

Have you followed any news today at all? Ozil deal was signed yesterday but had to wait until after Bale deal confirmed, and that had to be after Arsenal-spurs game. Draxler? he is out of the picure, this is probably the worst blog out there!!

    Panic buy???
What kind of idiot are you???

A panic buy would be someone like Gareth Barry or Charlie Adam – but players like Draxler who is considered a better prospect than Goetze, and Ozil the best playmaker in Spain with the highest assists are not panic buys.

Do morons that write these pieces know anything about football?

  • Gunner Tatoos says:

This is definitely not a `Panic Buy`.Would you call Bale`s transfer a `panic buy`? Or any of the transfers going on with every club? Some media circles just want to write negative news about Arsenal.Man U haven’t signed their intended targets but nothing gets said. Now that Arsenal seem to be doing the signings John Cross and his friends will definitely be `Cross again’. Our Arsenal will be back again and watch us reclaim our place in English football.
With Demba Ba, another defender, Ozil, a goalkeeper and additional winger we will be invincibles again.

    • Gunner Tatoos says:

Totally agree with you mate. These idiots have been writing a lot of bad stuff about Arsenal and now they are `panicking` because they know Arsenal will never go down.

  • Ben says:

    Panic Buy??

Draxler is not a panic buy, neither was per mertesacker, arteta, cazorla, podolski, sanogo or flamini. Ozil, di maria, benzema, suarez, higuan, none of these fall into panic buy category any of them is a quality purchase and would improve the team.

The names are quality prospects and the last word that comes into my mind is panic.

Whoever is negotiating does make me panic though, I just want to see one of these prospects in the shirt.
