Could Liverpool be about to seal this £19.7m deal?

|

Andriy YarmolenkoBrendan Rodgers has made some smart additions to his squad over the last couple of months, but fans still await a capper – a marquee signing that will provide the club with the impetus necessary to challenge for a top four slot.

Players like Kolo Toure and Simon Mignolet will make a big impact throughout this season, but the Reds still need more world-class talent to help elevate them up the Premier League table.

It’s not like Brendan hasn’t been trying. Liverpool were thought to be pursuing Armenian ace Henrikh Mkhitaryan before Borussia Dortmund snapped him up. The club also made a bid for Brazilian whiz-kid, Diego Costa and were also thought to be competing for Willian (who’s now at Chelsea).

As of yet, however, the former Swansea City boss has been unable to drag a big deal across the line. Let’s hope that changes before the transfer window slams shut.

This brings me to The Star‘s claim that Liverpool have made a £19.7m bid for Dynamo Kyiv striker, Andriy Yarmolenko. That’s a lot of dosh, but it does prove that the Reds are serious. Brendan could finally be about to seal the deal.

The bookies have slashed the odds on the Ukrainian forward moving to Anfield. Yarmolenko is now 2/5 to make a move to Liverpool.

His agent, Mikhail Gulordava has been clear about the interest in the player: “He would like to follow in the footsteps of [Andriy] Shevchenko. Premier League clubs are also interested.”

If Liverpool get their hands on the next Andriy Shevchenko, then they’ll have pulled off a real coup. We can only hope that he’s more successful for the Reds than Andriy was for the Blues.

Yarmolenko is a centre-forward/left-winger with a pretty impressive goal-scoring record. He’s scored 55 goals for Kyiv in 173 games. Not bad for a player whose position is always chopping and changing.

He’s also been impressive for the Ukranian International side, where he has found the back of the net 11 times in 32 appearances.

At just 23-years-old, he still has a way to go, but he’s extremely highly regarded and looks set to have a big future. It’s exciting to see the Reds move in on players like that, especially since he comes with a rather hefty price-tag.

I can only hope that Liverpool seal the deal and that Yarmolenko leads them to a Champions League finish this season.

What’s your take? Should the Reds snap up this Ukranian forward?

What if Sturridge gets injured? We get all excited when we score goals against minor teams like Notts County. But in the league there is only one goal scorer, Sturridge. It will take time for Aspas. We bring on Sterling, a good young player, who cannot hurt a fly, let alone the opposing teams goal. We need a proven goal scorer like Yarmolenkoke. When Suarez suspension is over he would inherit a top three team.
